About this listen

#1 New York Times-bestselling phenomenon Patrick Rothfuss returns to the wildly popular Kingkiller Chronicle universe with a stunning reimagining of "The Lightning Tree." Expanded to twice its previous length and lavishly illustrated by Nate Taylor, this touching stand-alone story is sure to please new audiences and veteran Rothfuss fans alike

No one taller than the stone. Come to blacktree, come alone. Tell no adult what’s been said, Lest the lightning strike you dead.

Follow the Kingkiller Chronicle’s most charming fae as he schemes his way through the small town of Newarre. While Bast cares nothing for the laws of man, he is beholden to older, deeper laws. And despite his cleverness and care, Bast finds himself forced to choose between betraying his master and helping a hated enemy.

Playful, sweet, and sly as Bast himself, The Narrow Road Between Desires explores a previously unseen part of Temerant, and shows a side of Bast we’ve only glimpsed before. Learn more about Bast as he goes against his better judgement and follows his heart’s desire.

For after all, what good is wisdom if it keeps you from finding your way to danger and delight?

I loved the story and the writing, as expected, was excellent. The problem I have is I was very disappointed to learn, after I purchased the title, that this was just a reboot of a story I had already read and not new material. Mr Rothfuss is an excellent author, the only thing he lacks is a consistent supply of material for his fans. I love everything he has done and have read it all multiple time. The only thing holding him back from the fantasy writers hall of fame is the short supply of material. I realize my opinion doesn’t mean much in the grand scale of things. I’ve been an avid reader of sci-fi and fantasy for over 40 years but I’ve never had the talent or gift Patrick nor do I truly know the effort it takes to produce these masterpieces but that’s just how I feel. By all means, you will enjoy the read, I’m just frustrated.

Unfortunate miscommunication.

Never disappointed by Patrick - an unbelievably beautiful and engaging story that would be rich to new readers, but holds so much more context for long time fans. Rothfuss has an uncanny ability to sympathetically bind his readers to his characters in a way no other can. Bravo!

Amazing, Whimsical, Beautiful, and Sweet

I did enjoy this more than the original, the story and prose are much improved. all I'm going to say is I hope this reignites his love for the story and gets back to finishing TDOS.

Polished version of the lightning tree

I haven't read the original lightning story. Knowing only this version, I found it enchanting. Since all the drinking buddy's were at the tavern, you know this takes place before Bast knows Kvothe visited the all knowing wicked fae tree. My heart is anxious over what Bast is going to go through in the next book. In this story you get to see how tricky and puzzling Bast is away from Kvothe. It's got layers upon layers of symbolism, a hint of violence, a dash of brow wiggle with a wink, and a pinch or two of heart warming goodness.

wonderful

I just finished this book and I can not say enough good things about it. I was mesmerized the whole time and Bast is definitely my favorite character. I’m going to listen too it again.

I wouldn’t read this book if you haven’t read the Kingkiller Chronicles. But if you have, this is a very lovely tale about Bast. Entertaining, funny, and heartwarming. A little look into Bast’s daily life and the every intriguing village of Newarre.

Beautiful Novella

Once again, well done, Mr. Rothfuss. Thank you for bringing this into the world and for making Bast such a delightfully good wolf.

Cream on top of the sugar flowers on top of icing on top of the cake that was The Lightning Tree..

I am a huge Rothfuss fan, I read this book the day it came out and of course had to check out the audiobook too. Nicks performance is exactly as amazing as you expect.
