Story
Hana Babic is a quiet middle-aged librarian in Minnesota who wants nothing more than to be left alone. But when a detective arrives with the news that her best friend has been murdered, Hana knows that something evil has come for her, a dark remnant of the past she and her friend had shared. Thirty years before, Hana was someone else: Nura Divjak, a teenager growing up in the mountains of war-torn Bosnia—until Serbian soldiers arrived to slaughter her entire family before her eyes. The events of that day thrust Nura into the war, leading her to join a band of militia fighters.

Story
Born to a poor couple who were tenant farmers on a plantation in Mississippi, Anne Moody lived through some of the most dangerous days of the pre-civil rights era in the South. The week before she began high school came the news of Emmet Till's lynching. Before then, she had "known the fear of hunger, hell, and the Devil. But now there was…the fear of being killed just because I was black." In that moment was born the passion for freedom and justice that would change her life.

Amazing historical, recounting, and excellent narration!
Reviewed: 02-28-25
In these times, when it seems as though certain people are trying to ban the recounting of the dark parts of American history, this book and books like it are absolutely necessary. Knowing the dark parts of our history should not make us feel guilty, but more determined to make sure the events of the past never happened again. The story Anne from her personal experiences is gripping, yet often humorous, and very well done, as was the narration of it. I highly recommend this book.

Like all the Bedwyn men, Aidan has a reputation for cool arrogance. But this proud nobleman also possesses a loyal, passionate heart - and it is this fierce loyalty that has brought Colonel Lord Aidan to Ringwood Manor to honor a dying soldier's request. Having promised to comfort and protect the man's sister, Aidan never expected to find a headstrong, fiercely independent woman who wants no part of his protection, nor did he expect the feelings this beguiling creature would ignite in his guarded heart.

I was pretty interested in this book until about 2/3 of the way through, then it started getting drawn out and even boring. Toward the end, I was skipping chapters to be able to get to the end. Still I give it four stars because it’s a good plot linefor people who are into cloak and dagger types of books.

Allen Eskens has become one of my favorite authors and The Deep Dark Descending did not disappoint! Unfortunately, I read a novel subsequent to this one first, so I was aware that Max had gone into seclusion after killing his wife’s murderer, but even that did not spoil the suspense and intrigue of this book. Excellent narration contributed to my being unable to put it down. Highly recommend!

Story
In a small Southern town where loyalty to family and to "your people" carries the weight of a sacred oath, defying those unspoken rules can be a deadly proposition. After 15 years of growing up in the Ozark hills with his widowed mother, high-school freshman Boady Sanden is beyond ready to move on. He dreams of glass towers and cityscapes, driven by his desire to be anywhere other than Jessup, Missouri. The new kid at St. Ignatius High School, if he isn't being pushed around, he is being completely ignored.

I read another novel by this author in which Boady Sanders was an adult attorney. It was so good that it resulted in my desire to read another book by Allen Eskens, and I’m so glad I read this one. Discovering Boady’s background was fascinating, and the plot of this story was just as engrossing as I’d hoped. Highly recommend!

Story
Ever since I met my handsome husband Dr Gabe Bonneville, I started playing the role of the perfect housewife. He works hard as a surgeon, so I look after our home, and throw elaborate dinner parties with champagne cocktails for his best friends Hugh and Anita. He’s my safe place and my chance to have the family I’ve always wanted. I’ve managed to hide the mornings when I wake up and see a face in the shadows. I haven’t told Gabe the truth about the woman who raised me, or told him about the therapy I’ve been getting so my secrets stay hidden in the dark.

Excellent first person narration!

The plot was a good one, the narration was good, but sometimes the story itself was confusing; at times even boring. I will recommend it because the good outweighs the bad and the end is satisfying.
