I really liked the book. It was extremely visceral. Not only the sound affects and various voice actors, but the writing itself. I really enjoyed the book and bought the second one halfway through the first.

Story
In most sports the pinnacle is Wheaties-box notoriety. But in the world of pool, notoriety is the last thing a hustler desires. Such is the dilemma that faces one Danny Basavich, an affable, generously proportioned Jewish kid from Jersey, who flounders through high school until he discovers the one thing he excels at - the felt - and hits the road.

Series had a good start

I liked the first book, but I hoped the story developed a bit more. The story moves at a snails pace. I swear half the book was about his wedding prep. Who wants to read that crap?
"Kitten..." His use of saying "Kitten" ever other sentence is the reason that I can't go on with the series. It's a stupid "pet" name and he uses it constantly. It was making my skin crawl by the end of the book.
The fights don't change much from the first book. I thought it was a bit lame that he fought goblins over and over again in the first book, but he continues to fight the same mobs in the second...
Don't bother with this series. There are far better books out there.

Story
Alex is dead. Dead and apparently with a one-way ticket to a place that only the worst of the worst go. All for a simple choice he made about a product his company owned. Damned for all time. Luckily for him, he’s about to be given a chance. Another choice to make. He can instead return to the land of the living, though his soul would belong to another. Except the world he’s being sent to isn’t the same one he came from. It’s not even a similar period in time, but from something long past in history. The dark ages.

Meh...
Reviewed: 12-14-18
The book has a lot of potential. Alex dies and makes a deal with a Wraith trick other people into signing away their soul to keep him from suffering eternally in hell. He's transported in time to take over the body and life of a baron who had recently died.
It's a good idea that could have created a lot of conflict, but there isn't a drop of it in this book. Instead he's a perfect guy who wins every battle, outsmarts everyone and never makes a bad choice. Everything goes his way all the time and he's arrogant as hell about it. ZZZZZZ.....
He could have been conflicted about tricking a good person into losing their soul. Or he could have damned an entire family line that would turn out to be his later in time. The story could have created a domino effect where more and more people had to keep signing souls to save themselves making all of humanity eventually sold to the devil and Wraith. But there is none of that.
The story goes like this. "You're in a really bad spot. Want to sign your soul away? Great, this also means that you got to have sex with me all the time." Then the damned souled woman falls in love with him and and goes with anything he proposes.... skldj;aklajoifjw gioanbkjnraswb'apsrjg

Story
For eons, conquering dungeons has been the most efficient way to become a strong adventurer. Although not everything is as straightforward as it seems. Several questions have always plagued the minds of those who enter these mythical places of power: why are there so many monsters? Where do the amazing weaponry and heavy gold coins come from? Why does the very air fill with life-giving energies? Cal has all of the answers to these age-old questions, for a very simple reason. He is a Dungeon Heart.

I bought this for my kids. We do the Whispernet thing with books to help them learn to read. This story was so good that I was looking forward to hearing where it was going to go next.
I highly recommend this cleverly written book. It was interesting how the author made both main characters both antagonist and protagonist in the story.

I wasn't sure what I would get purchasing this book. I was incredibly surprised by how good this book was to read and the presented ideas. I just recommended this book to an artist friend who has the same complaints as many writers. I think this book goes beyond just "writing advise." I think the suggestions here translate to much of life's endeavors.

In December 2009, a group of the CIA’s top terrorist hunters gathered at a secret base in Khost, Afghanistan, to greet a rising superspy: Humam Khalil al-Balawi, a Jordanian double-agent who infiltrated the upper ranks of al-Qaeda. For months, he had sent shocking revelations from inside the terrorist network and now promised to help the CIA assassinate Osama bin Laden’s top deputy. Instead, as he stepped from his car, he detonated a 30-pound bomb strapped to his chest, instantly killing seven CIA operatives....

This was a fantastic story that revealed some history not only about this particular incident, but why Barrack Obama's foreign policy changed so drastically early into his presidency.
I love hearing stories behind the stories. You don't have to love foreign policy to love this story.
After the story I looked up many of the people to learn more about their lives. It was a devastating tragedy to lose them.

The story could be a bit better

I'll give book two a shot. The book goes on too much about their feelings. I really wish the story had them a bit smarter in their professions highlighting different problem solving by their skills.
I like the mystery aspect, but it's a little too obvious what is happening here. It would be better if the author focused more on story development rather than teenage angst.
Yes we get it, the two guilds are enemies and consider themselves unique and better but are in fact the same.... Gah! Please quit hitting us over the head with this every chapter.
I'll give book 2 a chance, but if it's like book 1 I'm done with the series.
