Not bad

I had a more difficult time co-signing a lot of the murders in this one vs B&B. Because of that I don't think I fully connected with these two main characters. Also the narrator for Lachlan talked so slow I had to go to 1.2x speed, but that made everyone else sound really fast.

Story
I am the type of woman who always plays it safe. In my professional life as a public relations "fixer", and in my personal life, especially when it comes to the opposite sex. Really, who needs the wild highs and the I-want-to-die-because-he-left-me lows of a relationship? At least, that's what I thought...until I met HIM. Damian No-Last-Name-Given is sexy as sin, and I'd developed some kind of weird, instant attraction to him the moment he settled his chiseled body next to mine on a flight from London to Los Angeles.

I liked it overall. It had good narration. I kept getting put off every time they called a woman "female".

Story
When Finlay Ashowan joins the staff of the King and Queen of Daxaria, he’s an enigma. No one knows where he comes from or how he came to be where he is, which suits Fin just fine. He’s satisfied simply serving as the royal cook, keeping nosy passersby out of his kitchen, and concocting some truly uncanny meals. But Fin’s secret identity doesn’t stay hidden for long. After all, it’s not every day a house witch and his kitten familiar, Kraken, take to meddling in imperial affairs.

I listened to this during my commutes and I genuinely became annoyed upon arriving at any destination because I wouldn't want to stop the book. I loved everything about it. It's over 17 hours long so I thought it would last for a few weeks but I gobbled it up like one of Fin's tasty meals. I highly recommend it. Now I'm going to purchase more credits so I can listen to book 2 immediately!

I liked everything about this book. It was a lovely journey. One subtle but not so subtle thing I appreciated was that she NEVER ONCE expressed internal conflict with food or eating anything. That was refreshing.

I've seen some reviews call this book predictable. I disagree. It's a romcom so the outcome is inevitable but the journey to get there I found interesting and engaging.

Another reviewer wrote that this book was predictable. I think that's selling the author short. This family's story was inevitable.

Story
Hot on the tails of the gumiho who slaughtered her family, YeoWoo instead stumbles over the battered and broken body of a merman who knows just a little bit too much about her quarry. It should be simple to keep Marazul both alive and useful, but although YeoWoo is successful in the former, the latter is a different tail. YeoWoo has always taken what she wanted in blood and force. Athelas has always gained what he needed by deception and manipulation. With their usual methods failing at every turn and the investigation swiftly becoming deadly, it's time to make a few changes.

I struggled through the first 2 books. I only finished them because I was still on the momentum of having listened to the entire "City Between" series. This narrator is awful. He makes the story drag. And unfortunately, I don't care enough about these new characters to fight through it anymore. So sadly, I bid farewell to the possibility of meeting up with the City Between characters that I loved. The narrator has killed it for me. I'm returning this third installment with no regrets.

A complex world, wonderfully created
Reviewed: 02-03-24
I thoroughly appreciated the complexity of each character. The author created such a fascinating world with rich relationships. I had no trouble visualizing all of it.
The narration was impeccable. I won't even call it narration actually. This was true voice acting. Very well done.

Racism for no reason
Reviewed: 01-25-24
I couldn't even get through chapter two of this book. It was filled with so much unnecessary racist terminology. I get that the author was intending to make it funny but it wasn't even witty, nor was it being used to help move the storyline in any way. Do better or at least be funnier.
