About this listen

Athelas never wanted housemates. Now he has three: the gumiho for whom he provided an alibi, the tea-wielding housekeeper who poisoned him, and the young human who might pose the greatest danger of all.

All of Athelas's training tells him to kill small, soft things before something else does-or worse, before he grows fond of them and then something kills them. He should at least know better than to worry about the revenge-bent gumiho who is drawing the attention of every high-ranking Behindkind in Seoul Between.

Hot on the tails of the gumiho who slaughtered her family, YeoWoo instead stumbles over the battered and broken body of a merman who knows just a little bit too much about her quarry. It should be simple to keep Marazul both alive and useful, but although YeoWoo is successful in the former, the latter is a different tail.

YeoWoo has always taken what she wanted in blood and force. Athelas has always gained what he needed by deception and manipulation. With their usual methods failing at every turn and the investigation swiftly becoming deadly, it's time to make a few changes.

Athelas has begun to fear that if he does change, his life will forever spin out of his control...

Loving this Series!

I fell in love with the City Between and all of its characters and was/am ecstatic that there was a spin-off series following up on Athelas' story. This is the third book and I absolutely love seeing the changes beginning to occur in Athelas as well as the character development of his housemates. There are more encounters with the beloved characters from City Between and a better connection with the new characters introduced in this series. There have been a lot of negative comments about the narration, but, in my opinion, Matthew Lloyd Davies has a good interpretation of Athelas' character. Athelas was always described as being more calm, thoughtful, and laid-back, so it makes sense that the narration of his spin-off series and his dialogue would do the same. It was a little difficult to get used to if you had just finished the City Between series with the much perkier character of Pet and the exuberant narrator which fit with Pet's personality and style. I was able to adjust pretty quickly, however, and have thoroughly enjoyed the series- I also had read all of these books before they became available on Audible, which may have helped with the perspective a bit. I am looking forward to the next installments when they become available!

I love this series so much!

This is such an amazing series! And I absolutely love the theme of redemption!! Definitely reading this series for Athelas, but I have fallen in love with the new characters as well. I actually really like this narrator and think he’s done a great job. I also like the it’s the same narrator all the way through instead of having a male voice for the Athelas chapters and a female voice for the YeoWoo chapters (like how so many audiobooks do it now). I love the consistency! Can’t wait for the next book to come out on audio! ❤️

No longer interested

I struggled through the first 2 books. I only finished them because I was still on the momentum of having listened to the entire "City Between" series. This narrator is awful. He makes the story drag. And unfortunately, I don't care enough about these new characters to fight through it anymore. So sadly, I bid farewell to the possibility of meeting up with the City Between characters that I loved. The narrator has killed it for me. I'm returning this third installment with no regrets.
