The narrator didn't do it any favors
Reviewed: 05-28-20
It was bad, I couldn't get past the 1st chapter. Too much cliche, bad euphemisms and unnecessary description that made it come off like a bad biker noir. If you know a familiar saying or catch phrase, it's in there.

Story
Powers of Darkness is an incredible literary discovery. In 1900, Icelandic publisher and writer Valdimar Asmundsson set out to translate Bram Stoker's world-famous 1897 novel Dracula. Called Makt Myrkranna (literally, 'Powers of Darkness'), this Icelandic edition included an original preface written by Stoker himself. Makt Myrkranna was published in Iceland in 1901 but remained undiscovered outside of the country until 1986, when Dracula scholarship was astonished by the discovery of Stoker's preface to the book.

You don't get to the actual story until chapter 11

The story starts on chapter 11, everything before is forwards, intros and backstory of how it came about.

Story
Three months ago, I lost my foster sister, Sienna, to the darkness. As in blood magic and chaos and general mayhem. No one saw it until it was too late, but I should have. Now I have a wounded heart and soul that I can't even reveal to anyone around me, because I'm supposed to hate Sienna with the fiery passion of the justified - and I do.

I was really hoping for a good book, but I can't tell which is worse, the storyline or the narrator.

Welcome to Hemlock Cove, where the town is magically rebranded - but real witches aren't necessarily welcome. That makes things hard for the Winchester witches - including local newspaper reporter Bay. She's got a persnickety family - wait until you met Aunt Tillie - and a penchant for stumbling across trouble.

Is this YA?
Reviewed: 08-23-16
Between the text and the narrator, it sounds like a bad YA novel, I couldn't stand it anymore after a couple of chapters.

I don't know whether it's a bad narrator or a bad author, after 10 minutes I couldn't take it anymore and decided it was both.
