Bravery at its Finest

I love this book; and at first thought print would be better appreciated, but Julia Whalen’s narration adds to this beautifully written book. This historical novel is thoughtfully researched, set in two different worlds, with a complex character that touches the heart.
Planning on buying hard cover to give to all my warrior friends.

Story
Outside of a childhood nickname she can’t shake, Piglet’s rather pleased with how her life’s turned out. An up-and-coming cookbook editor at a London publishing house, she’s got lovely, loyal friends and a handsome fiancé, Kit, whose rarefied family she actually, most of the time, likes, despite their upper-class eccentricities. One of the many, many things Kit loves about Piglet is the delicious, unfathomably elaborate meals she’s always cooking.

I love this book. The author’s knowledge of food and vivid descriptions intrigues the reader. The realization that relationships can mimic the glossy allure of “tv food”, but in reality, all is not what it seems hooks the reader.
Great read and highly recommend.

Story
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

This book is staying with me. Beautiful story and written in a manner that leaves one wondering of the meaning in their journey. Haig writes without sanctimonious judgement and lets the reader appreciate the art of reflection and regret.
Mulligan is a marvel in her narration of the story. Brilliant performance.

Story
Real Americans begins on the precipice of Y2K in New York City, when twenty-two-year-old Lily Chen, an unpaid intern at a slick media company, meets Matthew. Matthew is everything Lily is not: easygoing and effortlessly attractive, a native East Coaster and, most notably, heir to a vast pharmaceutical empire. Lily couldn't be more different: flat-broke, raised in Tampa, the only child of scientists who fled Mao’s Cultural Revolution. Despite all this, Lily and Matthew fall in love.

Compelling Story
Reviewed: 05-16-24
I loved this book and left me wanting more! Narrated from the point of view of three generations I found the story compelling and relevant to today’s issues. The journey of an immigrant is told plainly and brutally honest along with the generations that followed and the impact of it had on them.
The story brilliantly states how each generation wants better for the next, but the road is filled with potholes that need to be maneuvered with care.
I highly recommend Rachel Kong’s writings and this book is amazing!

Story
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

As a first time reader of Westover I can assure you I am now a devout fan.

Seven-year-old Wen and her parents, Eric and Andrew, are vacationing at a remote cabin on a quiet New Hampshire lake. Their closest neighbors are more than two miles in either direction along a rutted dirt road. One afternoon, as Wen catches grasshoppers in the front yard, a stranger unexpectedly appears in the driveway. Leonard is the largest man Wen has ever seen, but he is young, friendly, and he wins her over almost instantly. Leonard and Wen talk and play until Leonard abruptly apologizes and tells Wen, “None of what’s going to happen is your fault.”

In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa.
