About this listen
Paul Tremblay’s terrifying twist to the home invasion novel—inspiration for the major motion picture from Universal Pictures
“Tremblay’s personal best. It’s that good.” — Stephen King
Seven-year-old Wen and her parents, Eric and Andrew, are vacationing at a remote cabin on a quiet New Hampshire lake. Their closest neighbors are more than two miles in either direction along a rutted dirt road.
One afternoon, as Wen catches grasshoppers in the front yard, a stranger unexpectedly appears in the driveway. Leonard is the largest man Wen has ever seen, but he is young, friendly, and he wins her over almost instantly. Leonard and Wen talk and play until Leonard abruptly apologizes and tells Wen, “None of what’s going to happen is your fault.” Three more strangers then arrive at the cabin carrying unidentifiable, menacing objects. As Wen sprints inside to warn her parents, Leonard calls out: “Your dads won’t want to let us in, Wen. But they have to. We need your help to save the world.”
Thus begins an unbearably tense, gripping tale of paranoia, sacrifice, apocalypse, and survival that escalates to a shattering conclusion, one in which the fate of a loving family and quite possibly all of humanity are entwined. The Cabin at the End of the World is a masterpiece of terror and suspense from the fantastically fertile imagination of Paul Tremblay.

Art Barbara was so not cool. He was a seventeen-year-old high school loner in the late 1980s who listened to hair metal, had to wear a monstrous back-brace at night for his scoliosis, and started an extracurricular club for volunteer pallbearers at poorly attended funerals. But his new friend thought the Pallbearers Club was cool. And she brought along her Polaroid camera to take pictures of the corpses.

Story
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

Story
In a matter of weeks, Massachusetts has been overrun by an insidious rabies-like virus that is spread by saliva. But unlike rabies, the disease has a terrifyingly short incubation period of an hour or less. Those infected quickly lose their minds and are driven to bite and infect as many others as they can before they inevitably succumb. Hospitals are inundated with the sick and dying, and hysteria has taken hold. To try to limit its spread, the commonwealth is under quarantine and curfew. But society is breaking down and the government's emergency protocols are faltering.

Story
Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip - a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfre. The boys are a tight-knit crew. There’s Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well-liked and easygoing; then there’s Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be there - which makes Scoutmaster Tim’s job a little easier.

Story
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Story
From New York Times best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a novel that is equal parts psychological horror and cutting social commentary on identity politics and the American-Indian experience. Fans of Jordan Peele and Tommy Orange will love this story as it follows the lives of four American-Indian men and their families, all haunted by a disturbing, deadly event that took place in their youth. Years later, they find themselves tracked by an entity bent on revenge, totally helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a vengeful way.

Story
Alma Katsu calls My Heart Is a Chainsaw “a homage to slasher films that also manages to defy and transcend genre.” On the surface is a story of murder in small-town America. But beneath is its beating heart: a biting critique of American colonialism, Indigenous displacement, and gentrification, and a heartbreaking portrait of a broken young girl who uses horror movies to cope with the horror of her own life.

Story
It is a world like our own in every respect, save one. In the 1950s, random acts of possession begin to occur. Ordinary men, women, and children are the targets of entities that seem to spring from the depths of the collective unconscious, pop-cultural avatars some call demons. As a boy, Del Pierce is possessed by the Hellion, an entity whose mischief-making can be deadly. With the help of Del's family and a caring psychiatrist, the demon is exorcised... or is it?

The living dead are more alive than ever! Zombies have become more than an iconic monster for the 21st century: They are now a phenomenon constantly revealing as much about ourselves - and our fascination with death, resurrection, and survival - as our love for the supernatural or post-apocalyptic speculation. Our most imaginative literary minds have been devoured by these incredible creatures and produced exciting, insightful, and unflinching new works of zombie fiction.

In June 1993, a group of young guerilla filmmakers spent four weeks making Horror Movie, a notorious, disturbing art-house horror flick. The weird part? Only three of the film’s scenes were ever released to the public, but Horror Movie has nevertheless grown a rabid fanbase. Three decades later, Hollywood is pushing for a big budget reboot. The man who played “The Thin Kid” is the only surviving cast member. He remembers all too well the secrets buried within the original screenplay, the bizarre events of the filming, and the dangerous crossed lines on set that resulted in tragedy.

As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

Great beginning to a good story but there were so many holes and
Unanswered questions - like, wth did these people really believe and why wasn’t that questioned from the very beginning by these obviously smart, intellectual & observant men? Instead they just succumbed in a way, and their capturers just didn’t explain themselves enough in the way they should have - given their task. I felt disappointed & especially when lives were lost

So much potential, so little delivery.
I had real hopes for this one seemed like an interesting premise, had to possiblity of being a more serious version of the "CABIN IN THE WOODS" movie, but ended up being a bland predictable, "is this real, is it not". It wanted to be 10 Cloverfield Lane in the worst way and it totally is Cloverfield Lane... in the worst way, without any of the satisfaction that movie ultimately gave. By the end nothing was really answered and the worst thing that could have happened (and would have been an interesting way to end it, or at least have been used to build an ending on) happened about 3/4 of the way through, and
I came up with 3 or 4 MUCH better endings, where this book couldn't even create an actual ending of any kind.
I don't know why this book was read by a woman. I have nothing against women narrators and enjoy listening to them when they are good. But this book is told mostly by men (or from men's perspective) and only a few sections (including the opening) are from a woman/ girls perspective.
Also this particular woman reader is not very good, I've heard MUCH worse (I'm looking at you Angela Dawe especially for Servents of the Twilight, so mechanical and toneless a robot would have had more emotion and correct emphasis) but this reader is still very stilted and uninspired.
It was a slog to finish and the journey was ultimately not worth the trip. Skip it.

The performance was so bland
Siri gives me a better performance then this narrator. The story itself was ok. But the narrator really made me want to stop in the middle of the store and never pick it up.

Creative Metaphor/ VO is crap
- Super politically driven and metaphorical plot points, but in the end become pretty obvious.
- great start but starts to drag on and feel redundant, also metaphor I’m sure.
- Author’s heart was in the right place when writing this book, and you can tell he is fed up with all the bullshit in the world which I wholeheartedly appreciate.
- one of the worst narrations I have heard on audible. Obviously voice casts aren’t always allowed to due budgets but I think two or three talented voice actors could have made this audiobook really cool.

Classic Tremblay
If you’ve read other novels by Paul Tremblay and enjoyed them, this will be right up your alley. It’s an extremely frustrating novel, which speaks to how well the author writes the characters.

Don’t waste your time
This book left to many unanswered questions. The narrator voice was so monotone that drove me crazy too.

Narration is terrible. Basically unbearable.
Story is okay, but I may have thought it was better if the narrator wasn't so horrible. I couldn't wait for this one to end. I wouldn't have kept on if this wasn't for my book club.
