Story
History happens all around you. And, occasionally, to you. I could have been a bomb-disposal expert, or a volunteer for the Mars mission, or a firefighter, something safe and sensible. But, no, I had to be an historian. It began well. A successful assignment to 17th century Cambridge to meet Isaac Newton, and another to witness the historic events at The Gates of Grief. So far so good.

Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

I am a voracious reader of audio and print, I found nothing wrong with the narration. I did have an occasional skip, not sure why. I think I enjoyed this one more than anything this year! I actually shouted No at “the end “. Book 2 is already sitting in my wishlist and I’m awaiting 11/7/23 with baited breath!

I loved the story. I found the narrator easy to listen too. I’ve listened to Hundreds of audio books and have no problem with singing being simply spoken. If I want singing I can watch the movie.

Horrible narration

The players are mostly teen girls. The other players are young men an a couple of older men and a smattering of older women. The narrator is a Flat Speaking male! It was confusing, if I paused for more than a second or two I would have to go back and read that chapter again just to see who was up. Oh. I’m not new to audio books. My audible account is at almost 600 titles and this is one of three audio files I use. I almost returned it several times per day. I am glad I stuck with it for the end.

I actually bought it by accident. Then I thought well I guess it was fated, and if it was horrible I would return it. But it was excellent from word one. Also the narrator was easy to listen too. I’ll look for another book using the same cast.

Her pretty face still hangs like a watchful queen on the posters on the walls of the town’s Baptist church, the police station, and in the high school. They all promise the same thing: We will find you. Meanwhile, Tru's brother, Wyatt, lives as a pariah in the desolation of the old family house, cleared of wrongdoing by the police but tried and sentenced in the court of public opinion and in a new documentary about the crime.

This is the second book by this author and I’ve loved them both. This book was riveting from page one. I’ll admit that a couple of times I went back and re-read a chapter to make sure I missed nothing. I will be reading this book again. It already feels like an old friend.

Story
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.
