Good thing it was free because $0 is still more than it’s worth. Truly terrible.

Loved his previous books but this one was beyond awful!

It hard to say whether the narration or story were worse. But both were absolutely terrible.

Narration
Granted there were a lot of characters but the narrator literally screeched for half the women and did a gravelly voice for the other half. Weirdly the men mostly all had a normal voice that sounded mostly the same and pleasant.

Story
The characters were awful, unlikeable, one dimensional tropes. Every character was a caricature. The plot felt incomplete and, frankly, not very interesting. Even most of the “good” characters were terrible people. So much emotional and (references to past physical abuse) by some of the parents that goes totally unchecked and treated like a bit of a joke. The main character rarely had an emotion other than benevolence, which was unbelievable and undeserved by those around her who never learned a lesson. Hate listened to most of this book hoping it would get better but it didn’t.

The plot was so thin and poorly unfolded. The one dimensional characters were extremely unlikeable.

The author tried so hard to be cute and clever that it was just painful. The unconventional way of telling the story was disjointed and cringy. Really wish I hadn’t wasted a credit on this.

Really wanted to like this but ugh! Character is such a snob whose holier than thou attitude is insufferable. It’s not a mystery why her kids chose boarding school over living with her - a total narcissist. Offensive stereotypes are used that the main character “disapproves” of but engages with. Just yikes all around.

Terrible writing and misogyny

The series starts halfway through a story and never gives the backstory. That said the first book was fine.
The second book was awful. I couldn’t finish. The narrator blames the dead girl for getting killed because she wore “too short skirts that attracted the wrong type of attention” and “hung out with a bad crowd” aka her coworker who also wore a short skirt and black eyeliner. The horror.

Lots of potential but really overwrought. If the author had cut about 2/3 of the philosophizing, explaining therapy, and dragging out the final confrontation with the bad guy, it would have been delightful.

For a series marketed to women, the misogyny oozing from each encounter with a male character was nauseating.

This was bad, especially the second half. Pretty sure the author gets paid by the word regardless of substance because much of this book was a copy and paste of the first book in series. Halsey was my favorite character from the first book so was excited to read this. But the author did him so dirty! The plot lines and character development were all over the place and then a huge issue near the end was just easily resolved in about 5 min. All the characters are less likeable and more one dimensional here. And the narration of main female character was distractingly terrible!
