I’ve read many books about leadership. This one captivated my interest beyond all the others. How can anyone say leadership is simple? The Admiral did and I understood. This read gave me the boost I needed! Thank you, Admiral.

After audio-reading Urban Trauma I had to add Beyond Ally to my required reading list. It’s a candid and direct tell-it-as-it-is book that makes no apologies for raising much needed awareness on the subject of white privilege, racial equity, social Justice, and “allyship.” Even as a Latino male I was holding my breath throughout wondering “how the hell” am I/are we going to take this on?! But, it’s all there in a master blueprint. Thank you Dr. Akbar!

Why Do So Many Incompetent Men Become Leaders?

Story
In this timely and provocative book, Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic asks two powerful questions: Why is it so easy for incompetent men to become leaders? And why is it so hard for competent people - especially competent women - to advance? Marshaling decades of rigorous research, Chamorro-Premuzic points out that although men make up a majority of leaders, they underperform when compared with female leaders. In fact, most organizations equate leadership potential with a handful of destructive personality traits, like overconfidence and narcissism.

As a public service practitioner with many years of lived experience, I am relieved to read this "tell-it-like-it-is" and "back-it-up-with-facts" book about the truth of leadership and leaders in organizations in every sector of society. With all the literature and lectures on good, effective, and positive leadership, it appears most leaders are not reading, embracing, or accepting the principles of sound leadership. They would much rather scratch or network their way into positions of influence and spend their careers defending it and protecting dysfunctional cultures than actually making a difference in the lives of people they are charged with serving. The gender distinctions, though certainly not accurate for all, are spot on in my experience. It took courage and principled-centered leadership to write this book. Bravo!

The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning “1619 Project” issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This new book substantially expands on that work, weaving together 18 essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with 36 poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance.

A Book for Every American to Read and/or Listen To
Reviewed: 04-10-22
The 1619 Project has opened my mind and understanding about what I already thought I understood. As a person of color who studied the Civil Rights Movement and the struggle of African Americans in America, I believed to be sufficiently knowledgeable and prepared to digest this book in print or audio. I was not. The historical account from scholarly work, use of poems, noting of important dates/moments/events in time, and range and depth of content, voices, and perspectives has re-educated and stirred me anew. Not a day goes by where I am not reflecting and still learning from the many chapters in the book. I am watching events playing out in my community, our country, and abroad with a deeper understanding of race, economics, power, culture, education, faith, politics, hope, reparations, forgiveness, redemption, and continued struggle and rebellion, The audio version is a storytelling experience that is truly stirring!

Finally, Strategic Planning is About Doing!
Reviewed: 11-16-21
Strategic Doing is easily the most digestible reading (I followed along with the hardcover book) I’ve done on the subject of planning. As a public service leadership practitioner, I have been professionally frustrated with the implantation of complex processes that overwhelm or disconnect staff. The emphasis on analysis and rigorous collection and submission of data and reports has always deflated any momentum to reinvigorate an organization. I think Strategic Doing might be the answer I’ve been looking for in terms of practical application and employer and stakeholder engagement.

Phenomenal book for anyone in leadership or public service!

A sobering look at the state of young American culture and the seemingly disappearing work ethic and loss of character development. Ben Sasse needs to have a more visible presence and stronger voice in the public debate (or lack thereof) about the identity and future of our country. We need balanced, disciplined, and respectful discourse; not extremism and win-at-all-cost contests!
