July 1995. April and Eddie have taken a wrong turn. They’re looking for the small resort town where they plan to spend their honeymoon. When they spot what appears to a lone hitchhiker along the deserted road, they stop to help. But not long after the hitchhiker gets into their car, they see the blood seeping from her jacket and a truck barreling down Atticus Line after them.

Story
My name is Amelia Gray. I'm a cemetery restorer who sees ghosts. In order to protect myself from the parasitic nature of the dead, I've always held fast to these rules passed down from my father…until now. Detective John Devlin needs my help to find a killer, but he is haunted by ghosts who shadow his every move. To warn him would be to invite them into my life. I've vowed to keep my distance, but the pull of his magnetism grows ever stronger even as the headstone symbols lead me closer to truth and to the gossamer veil that separates this world from the next.

Slow, but I stuck with it

I thought this was a worthwhile listen, but slow and leaving a lot unanswered. I’ll continue the series and hope that the gradual build is leading to worthy conclusions. I like the characters and the storylines. I’m interested to see where it goes.

Very well written. The unconscionable crimes are explained, but in such a way that the focus stays where the heart is, which is with the sibling relationship that supersedes everything else. This is a ghost story based on human experiences, not relying on horror or magic. The twists were compelling. A couple of times, I prepared myself to be frustrated, but then I wasn’t at all. Each initiative or line of investigation was handled quickly and kept the story moving. I was curious and invested in the characters and how they interacted. I loved the brother and sister. This was a good ghost story mystery that handled a difficult scenario well.

The Covent Garden Ladies tells the story of Samuel Derrick, Jack Harris, and Charlotte Hayes, whose complicated and colorful lives were brought together by the publication of Harris' List, an infamous guidebook of prostitutes which detailed addresses, physical characteristics, and "specialties". The true history of the book is a tragicomedy motivated by poverty, passionate love, aspiration, and shame.

Educational and interesting history, particularly since information is so limited for women in this era. I really appreciated the content.
Narration was odd. Every sentence was read the same way regardless of content. I eventually got used to it, but the delivery could have been much more engaging.

Story
In Unmasking Autism, Dr. Devon Price shares their personal experience with masking and blends history, social science research, prescriptions, and personal profiles to tell a story of neurodivergence that has thus far been dominated by those on the outside looking in. For Dr. Price and many others, Autism is a deep source of uniqueness and beauty. Unfortunately, living in a neurotypical world means it can also be a source of incredible alienation and pain.

As a recently diagnosed adult, this book felt surreal and deeply personal. It’s an odd feeling to open a book that seems as if it was written about or for you. I bought the hard copy and made notes in it while I listened to the audiobook.
It was overwhelming at points, but not in a bad way. It’s hard to articulate, but I could relate so much to certain topics that it was affecting and I needed time to step back and take it in. So, I listened for a bit. Then took sometimes weeks away, and then listened a bit more. I needed to think and process and talk through parts of it before I could hear more. Now, I plan to start over.
Though surprising to me, the diagnosis and education have ultimately been very comforting and make so many things make sense. I am grateful for the book. It has been what I needed at the time I needed it.

Robert K. Massie returns with another masterpiece of narrative biography, the extraordinary story of an obscure German princess who became Catherine the Great. Born into a minor noble family, Catherine transformed herself into empress of Russia by sheer determination. For thirty-four years, the government, foreign policy, cultural development, and welfare of the Russian people were in her hands.

The Earl of St. Merryn needs a woman. His intentions are purely practical - he simply wants someone sensible and suitably lovely to pose as his betrothed for a few weeks among polite society. He has his own agenda to pursue, and a false fiancée will keep the husband-hunters at bay while he goes about his business. The simplest solution is to hire a paid companion. Finding the right candidate proves more of a challenge than he expected.

Creative approach to ghost stories
Reviewed: 02-26-23
I’m really enjoying this creative take on the traditional ghost story. However, this is perhaps the first instance when I will say that I am glad to have watched the Netflix series before I read the books. I think I would have been really confused if I had tried to read the first book without already knowing the premise. The approach to handling the “visitors” and the “problem” overall are just so uniquely different from other stories I’ve read.
Between the Netflix series and the first book (I don’t know what’s to come in later books yet) these seem to be stories about human ghosts, brought about by human choices. And though the human choices that led to ghosts were often terrible, they were terrible humans or human circumstances — not demons etc. That is my first criterion for a ghost story. I like human stories because they unfold like genealogy with research and explanations that I can wrap my head around. So, so far, I’m in. On to the next book in the series!
