Craig McNamara grew up in the aura of Camelot and the Armageddon of Vietnam. He thought the keys to understanding were held by his father. Although he could never quite find answers through his famous father, he discovered wisdom and understanding in his family, his community, and the land.

Very interesting premise, the story blasts off quickly from a humdrum earth life into militaristic space of the future. I wasn't find of the "squash-em-or-die" reality Scalzi paints, nor was I happy about his "you don't have the math to understand this" attitude about the science, but the story hangs well.
