Story
Towards the end of the 19th century and for the first few years of the 20th, a strange invasion took place in Britain. The citadel of power, privilege, and breeding in which the titled, land-owning governing class had barricaded itself for so long was breached. The incomers were a group of young women who, 50 years earlier, would have been looked on as the alien denizens of another world - the New World, to be precise. From 1874 - the year that Jennie Jerome, the first known "Dollar Princess", married Randolph Churchill - to 1905, dozens of young American heiresses married into the British peerage....

Not only interesting, but a wonderful history lesson. So much money left America with these marriages that often failed. British aristocracy can thank American heiresses for rescuing many of the beautiful mansions that were failing. If I had, listened to this book prior to watching Downton Abbey, I would have had a better appreciation for the series which was already terrific.

I got bored with this. Maybe because I’m 72 with no children but I did work for 40 years. Just found this repetitive. I’m sure it’s an excellent book but probably for younger women with children.

Story
He's an American legend, a straight-shooting businessman who brought Chrysler back from the brink and in the process became a media celebrity, newsmaker, and a man many had urged to run for president. The son of Italian immigrants, Lee Iacocca rose spectacularly through the ranks of Ford Motor Company to become its president, only to be toppled eight years later in a power play that should have shattered him.

Fascinating Man
Reviewed: 10-27-18
I’m sure this is an abbreviated autobiography. Now I want to read more. Listening to this man, I can feel his genuine goodness and integrity. It’s no wonder he succeeded in whatever he did. He wasn’t trying to fool anyone so all his energy went into succeeding and not covering his tracks. Too bad we don’t have leaders like this anymore. He made me proud to be of Italian descent because I identified with much of what he said about his parents.

Story
When Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bill Dedman noticed in 2009 a grand home for sale, unoccupied for nearly 60 years, he stumbled through a surprising portal into American history. Empty Mansions is a rich mystery of wealth and loss, connecting the Gilded Age opulence of the 19th century with a 21st-century battle over a $300 million inheritance. At its heart is a reclusive heiress named Huguette Clark, a woman so secretive that, at the time of her death at age 104, no new photograph of her had been seen in decades.

Wow! Excellent, excellent book. The narration was great, kept my attention and the recordings of Hugette’s actual voice gave me a connection to this interesting lady. I don’t think this book tries to sway the reader one way or the other. Gives you the facts and you can make your own judgement. But this is sure an insight into the good, the bad and the ugly of money. Well worth the read!

Story
"What William Cecil has accomplished at Biltmore Estate is one of the great preservation success stories of all time. He has set a high standard for what all historic house museums strive for: magnificently preserved buildings and grounds, engaging interpretation, and - perhaps most challenging of all - economic self-sufficiency. It is no surprise that Biltmore Estate is widely recognized as one of America's finest places to visit." (Richard Moe, National Trust for Historic Preservation)

Really enjoyed this book. The narrator was especially good. I learned much about the Gilded Age and respect the generations of Vanderbilts who have worked so hard to preserve their legacy. Many such families have not. Strongly recommend this read.
