Excellent - this should be read in every high school!
Reviewed: 08-26-24
As always, I love the way the authors write and that it is based on history, but most of all, I love the way Mary and Eleanor become such close friends with such a huge racial divide in our country at that time. Unfortunately, I believe there is still a great racial divide because people want to “talk”, but not really “listen” to what the other’s are saying.
As a former long-term substitute teacher at the middle & high school levels, I believe this would be an amazing reading requirement for all high schools in America and beyond.

Story
Elise Sontag is a typical Iowa 14-year-old in 1943 - aware of the war but distanced from its reach. Then her father, a legal US resident for nearly two decades, is suddenly arrested on suspicion of being a Nazi sympathizer. The family is sent to an internment camp in Texas, where behind the armed guards and barbed wire, Elise feels stripped of everything beloved and familiar, including her own identity. The only thing that makes the camp bearable is meeting fellow internee Mariko Inoue, a Japanese-American teen from Los Angeles.

The character of Elise was charming and I found the book interesting. I wish more young people would read books like this in order to understand how quickly things can change.

Story
If you ever struggle with your connection to God (or whether you even feel connected to a faith at all!), you're not alone. Especially in our modern world, with its relentless, never-ending news cycle, we can all grapple with such questions. Do we do that alone, with despair and resignation? Or do we make sense of it with God, and with hope? In these uncertain times, could believing in the power of divine love make the most sense?

I wish Savannah had written this when I was in my 20’s… but she would have been a young teen!
This book is an excellent example of the God I know personally. I’m so glad God gifted Savannah with the eloquence and forthrightness to put what so many of us experience into words.
I have already finished the book, gifted it multiple times, and have shared the title with many friends. This is the type of book, in addition to the Living Word of God, The Holy Bible, that can change a generation for the better.
I am forever in Savannah’s debt!

I loved hearing the story of sweet Nanny Lala. Her love of “her children” was so precious. In addition, this sweet woman was able to know and meet so many people that most of us will never know.
I truly enjoyed learning, laughing, and crying while I listened. This book should stand the test of time. Bravo!

On an island in the Great Massasauga Swamp—an area known as “The Waters” to the residents of nearby Whiteheart, Michigan—herbalist and eccentric Hermine “Herself” Zook has healed the local women of their ailments for generations. As stubborn as her tonics are powerful, Herself inspires reverence and fear in the people of Whiteheart, and even in her own three estranged daughters. The youngest—the beautiful, inscrutable, and lazy Rose Thorn—has left her own daughter, eleven-year-old Dorothy “Donkey” Zook, to grow up wild.

Odd

It was just an odd book and not at all what I expected. It was so odd, that rather than stop listening, I continued to the end. Honestly, these are the most backward group of characters I’ve ever read about, making it seem less like a novel, and more like a fantasy book. Honestly, I think I kept listening because the readers voice was so melodic.

Story
From 1783, when German immigrant John Jacob Astor first arrived in the United States, until 2009, when Brooke Astor’s son, Anthony Marshall, was convicted of defrauding his elderly mother, the Astor name occupied a unique place in American society. The family fortune, first made by a beaver trapping business that grew into an empire, was then amplified by holdings in Manhattan real estate. Over the ensuing generations, Astors ruled Gilded Age New York society and inserted themselves into political and cultural life, but also suffered the most famous loss on the Titanic.

It was informative, but became a bit confusing. Also, in the very beginning, he spoke of an accompanying pdf, but I don’t know where to find that on Audible. That would have helped a lot since there were so many branches at one point.

Story
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

I loved it!
Reviewed: 11-12-23
I loved the characters, being so inside their heads, and the colorful, yet not overly colorful way they saw the their world. I think what I enjoyed the most is that I never quite knew where the stories were heading, so was often surprised by where the story went. I also enjoyed Maura Tierney’s soft smooth voice and the pace in which she read the story.
Another great Ann Neapolitan book!!! Congrats!!!🍾

Depressing, yet I’m glad I stuck with it
Reviewed: 11-06-23
On the positive side, although I’ve heard of Postpartum depression, I did not experience it personally, so I found that part of the storyline informative. Additionally, I am personally pro-life, however do know that some women were, and still find themselves in a very difficult spot. I have an incredible amount of empathy for them, but this book became far too political and unbelievable in the end. Why would these the adult children, who are paying their father’s medical bills be happy that their father had squandered their inheritance on PP? That made no sense to me and seemed like a real leap to promote the author’s personal views.
I think what disturbed me the most were all of the extremes… the extreme post-part depression that Grace experiences; MaryAnn’s extreme women’s rights views; their parents extreme reactions to not being able to control their children and grandchildren’s lives… it was all just a bit too much for me.

Story
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

This life-story just goes to show that money and titles do not buy love, happiness or security. I pray that King Charles’s reign is brief and that the brothers and their wives will find a way to reconcile their families. I grew up having cousins who were estranged from us due to their mother’s mental illness (I am not saying any of the royals are mentally ill) and rage. It was quite distressing, but we are all fortunate to have found one another again and our bond is tight. I pray this is also true for Diana’s children and grandchildren.
