#1 New York Times Bestseller

Guthrie persuasively renders the evolution of a hard-won religious belief that makes room for imperfection and "does not require us to ignore... the sorrows we experience or the unjustness we see but to believe past it." This openhearted offering inspires.—Publishers Weekly

Mostly what God does is love you.

If we could believe this, really believe this, how different would we be? How different would our lives be? How different would our world be?

If you ever struggle with your connection to God (or whether you even feel connected to a faith at all!), you're not alone. Especially in our modern world, with its relentless, never-ending news cycle, we can all grapple with such questions. Do we do that alone, with despair and resignation? Or do we make sense of it with God, and with hope? In these uncertain times, could believing in the power of divine love make the most sense?

In this collection of essays, Savannah Guthrie shares why she believes it does. Unspooling personal stories from her own joys and sorrows as a daughter, mother, wife, friend, and professional journalist, the award-winning TODAY show coanchor and New York Times bestselling author explores the place of faith in everyday life.

Sharing hard-won wisdom forged from mountaintop triumphs, crushing failures, and even the mundane moments of day-to-day living, Mostly What God Does reveals the transformative ways that belief in God helps us discover real hope for this life and beyond.

A perfect companion to your morning cup of coffee, this incisive volume—not a memoir but a beautiful tapestry of reflections crafted as a spiritual manual—includes:

  • a fresh, biblically rooted look at six essentials of faith: love, presence, grace, hope, gratitude, and purpose;
  • an honest exploration of questions, doubts, and fears about the love of God;
  • a dose of encouragement for the faith-full, the faith-curious, and the faith-less; and
  • …and much more.

This deeply personal collection is designed to engage the practical ways that God loves you—not just the world, but you—and to inspire you to venture down a path of faith that is authentic, hopeful, destiny-shaping, and ultimately life-changing.

Spoke to me

This was what I needed to listen to at this time in my life. Lost my precious husband 6 months ago to cancer. This helped me look at all the events this past year, the past 45 years, my childhood, and the future in a new light of promises fulfilled & to come. Thank you Savannah for your words of Faith in our spiritual journey.

Lord I need thee….

Savannah has finally done it! Beautifully written with a profound faith that she has so selflessly shared with the world. The Sandy Hook mom’s words broke in tears. South touching and a must read for teenagers.

Enjoyable, Enlightening, Filled with Humility

I know Savannah Guthrie as most of us do: as that bright, smart, sparkly personality on Today. Here, we are welcomed into her very personal inner world … the one filled with anxiety and doubt, imperfection and flaws that none of us suspected she harbors. Her focus on faith throughout her life’s journey is compelling and beautifully told. I am so happy that I chose this title of all the available offerings. This book is a standout and worth a listen!

Closer to God through Savannah

I liked the candor. Also, the need for space even as simple as thirty seconds to take a breath and absorb.

Surprisingly Informative

This book was surprisingly informative as I didn't expect this book to be so darn good. My wife persuaded me to listen to it and I assumed it would be quite light and fluffy with a heavy emphasis on "feel good" antidotes with little concentration on examination of religious thoughts and ideas. Shame on me.... Mrs. Guthrie narrates the book as if she is having a conversation with you. She shows a knack for reducing some complicated issues to everyday concepts of relatability. Her honesty and vulnerability were apparent throughout the book, making it easy for the listener to have further introspection about their own thoughts regarding God and the application of religious thought to everyday life. Overall, I thought it was wonderfully written and narrated. I want to thank Mrs. Guthrie for sharing a side of herself with us. It confirmed my belief that oftentimes prayer is nothing more than having a conversation with God. When I finished the book, I felt like I had just had another conversation with our creator, and I hope you will feel the same way. 30 seconds.....starting now.
