Story
In the 1950s, Oscar Hammerstein is asked to write the lyrics to a musical based on the life of a woman named Maria von Trapp. He’s intrigued to learn that she was once a novice who hoped to live quietly as an Austrian nun before her abbey sent her away to teach a widowed baron’s sickly child. What should have been a ten-month assignment, however, unexpectedly turned into a marriage proposal. And when the family was forced to flee their home to escape the Nazis, it was Maria who instructed them on how to survive using nothing but the power of their voices.

A fan of The Sound of Music, I was drawn in by this book. I had not known the true stories surrounding the Von Trapp family, so it was great to hear them. The weaving back and forth was so good and I appreciated the ending!

Story
After being fired from his last two jobs, Ryan Clark lands an associate position with a law firm run by his distant cousin, Tom, in a small North Carolina town. Over twenty-five years earlier, Tom represented local man Joe Moore when he was convicted of murder in the deaths of a prominent young couple. Even though the evidence was circumstantial, Joe was high on drugs and doesn't remember the details of the crime. He never seriously questioned his own guilt, but Joe's family remains unconvinced of his guilt, and they hire Ryan and Tom to file a motion to obtain Joe's release.

Suspenseful but a little long

The characters are well developed - but maybe a bit too much, as the story seemed to drag a bit halfway through. However, it was interesting enough to want to stay with it and later on it became more and more exciting. The gospel message is clearly told all throughout the book - a good clean message.

In Such Good Company delves into little-known stories of the guests, sketches, and antics that made the show legendary as well as some favorite tales too good not to relive again. Nice to hear her voice but too many details

Not sure what I expected, but the scripts of many of the shows got tedious about halfway through. Her stories about how she came to be in show business, how the show started and her many guests were on the show were great. But the reading of several scripts did not interest me at all. The humor of the skit - in my opinion - was lost by the deadpan reading. I’m sure Ms Burnett found it funny, but the book would have been better had it been shorter without these narrated skits. In fact I fast-forwarded to move beyond some of these to speed up the process to get to the end of the book!

I listened to this book because I liked another of the author’s books and the genre. However, this one ended up a bit bizarre. I thought it could have been shorter without some of the side plots - or the details of them. If you like a lot of detail, this is for you. The reader did a great job with the narration, since he also did women’s voices.

This book is good enough to want to hold on till the end - to find out who done it! However speaking as a clergy member myself I will say that the main character is represented as kind of naive. In this day and age he is making some commitments that the average clergy would not. That makes some of the scenes unbelievable. Otherwise it’s a great book.

Great character development

The development of the main characters and their families was great. At one point I even thought that every current female military member of color should listen to this to gain a perspective of history. However it was written as a fictional novel and it is difficult to ascertain whether it is actually that or true history. The ending was a bit disappointing.

Story
Every leader functions on two stages - the front stage or public world, and the back stage or private world. One cannot lead successfully front stage when one is completely depleted back stage. In a time when pastors are leaving the ministry in record numbers due to cynicism, disillusionment, weariness, and personal scandals, there is an urgent need for soul care in the private lives of leaders. Replenish helps leaders focus on the back stage, the interior life, in order to remain spiritually healthy. In a caring, encouraging tone, it will show pastors how to prioritize.

I listened to this primarily while driving, as I usually do, not realizing there are insightful questions for reflection at the end of each chapter. Although I did stop the book on occasion to reflect, I found it hard to maintain the value of the content without writing my thoughts down. So I ordered the paper book and look forward to reviewing each of those questions with thoughtful soul searching and prayer - and putting the action steps into practice. While I am not a lead pastor, I do lead a team and much of this content has challenged me in many ways. If you are considering listening to the book be prepared. It is easy listening-but challenging only if you allow it to be.

We are constantly being formed by the world around us. To be formed by Jesus will require us to become his apprentice. To live by what the first Christian disciples called a Rule of Life—a set of practices and relational rhythms that slow us down and open up space in our daily lives for God to do what only God can do—transforms the deepest parts of us to become like him.

How often have you heard, “Don’t let your emotions get the best of you”? But what if instead of ignoring our feelings, we noticed them, named them, and let God use them to draw us closer to Himself and others? Many of us need to unlearn damaging messages about our emotions. We’ve been taught, for example, that emotions are untrustworthy, when, in fact, God can use them to help us see where we need His healing.

Although the reading seemed choppy and unlike her usual speaking style i was able to understand most of it. (Some of the words seemed to trail off at the end of the sentences but maybe that was me?…) the subject was based a lot on her personal experience as well as many others in her life, which is helpful. However I would have preferred more scriptural content which came more toward the end of the book. Of you start to listen and are put off at first hang in there, it pulls together in the last chapter.
Finally, FYI there are multiple publisher previews at the end of this book - which I could not easily stop and move on to another book while driving.
