Story
America's first frontier was not the West; it was the sea, and no one writes more eloquently about that watery wilderness than Nathaniel Philbrick. In his best-selling In the Heart of the Sea, Philbrick probed the nightmarish dangers of the vast Pacific. Now, in an epic sea adventure, he writes about one of the most ambitious voyages of discovery the Western world has ever seen - the US Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842.

So well written. And Scott Brick is one of my favorite narrators. I’m a distant relative of Charles Wilkes, never knew much about his Naval career and I am so grateful to have come across this publication.

Story
Finding and identifying a pirate ship is the hardest thing to do under the sea. But two men—John Chatterton and John Mattera—are willing to risk everything to find the Golden Fleece, the ship of the infamous pirate Joseph Bannister. At large during the Golden Age of Piracy in the seventeenth century, Bannister should have been immortalized in the lore of the sea—his exploits more notorious than Blackbeard’s, more daring than Kidd’s. But his story, and his ship, have been lost to time.

Story
In the decades since his execution by the Nazis in 1945, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German pastor, theologian, and anti-Hitler conspirator, has become one of the most widely read and inspiring Christian thinkers of our time. Now, drawing on extensive new research, Strange Glory offers a definitive account, by turns majestic and intimate, of this modern icon.

Not My Favorite Author
Reviewed: 03-16-22
I chose this book because I was so captivated by Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Cost of Discipleship as well as his Letters And Papers From Prison. I so admire people who are willing to sacrifice everything for their beliefs. I enjoyed this particular biography despite continuous references to what the author presented as a same-sex attraction on Dietrich's part toward his best friend Eberhard Bethge. I appreciated the in-depth, detailed account of Bonhoeffer's spiritual journey. But honestly, the continuous, repeated, references to what the author claimed was the homosexual angle were just plain obnoxious (enough already!). I was left with the impression that proving this Christian martyr was actually gay (without saying it in so many words) was the actual goal of this author.

Story
In late March 1944, as Stalin’s forces push into Ukraine, young Emil and Adeline Martel must make a terrible decision: Do they wait for the Soviet bear’s intrusion and risk being sent to Siberia? Or do they reluctantly follow the wolves—murderous Nazi officers who have pledged to protect “pure-blood” Germans? The Martels are one of many families of German heritage whose ancestors have farmed in Ukraine for more than a century.

The Answer Is Hinduism, Really?
Reviewed: 11-07-21
I can't believe I wasted my time. The story was ponderous and plodding at times but they were making progress, hopefully, toward freedom, etc, when it becomes at first partial and then assumes front stage that Hinduism is the answer to all of life's problems. On and on it goes, the many wonderful facets of hinduism in all its marvelous glory. I don't mind the mention of religion as part of the overall plot. But this seems to be a thinly veiled infomercial. I gave up 2/3 of the way through.

Crammed into the Packard along with Jubie are her three siblings, her mother, and the family’s black maid, Mary Luther. For as long as Jubie can remember, Mary has been there - cooking, cleaning, compensating for her father’s rages and her mother’s benign neglect, and loving Jubie unconditionally.

Bittersweet, Moving Story
Reviewed: 09-09-21
This is a very poignant story, a compelling read, and probably not far from actual historic truth based on what I've read about our Southern history. The Jim Crow laws, which were strictly enforced just after the Civil War until about 1968, maintained clear distinction between the rights of Southern white people and those of Southern black families. Most white families did not have full time help or nannies, but it was common amongst upper middle class families to have black nannies, a cook and often a cleaning lady. The legal system was stacked against the rights of black people and yes, crimes committed against them often went under reported or ignored entirely. That was the culture back then, it was a very dark time. However, I did enjoy this book, it was well written: the characters were fleshed out, the plot was intriguing and unpredictable, and the narration was perfect.

Great Performance, Ridiculous Storyline

This is the second in the Atlee Pine series. It's fast paced and tense, filled with twists and unexpected new obstacles. Atlee's character is completely unbelievable though, as is the number of concussions, serious bruises, gunshot wounds and whatever else she endures but instantly recovers from. And no matter what's going on or how difficult the obstacles, she always charges ahead completely oblivious to the people around her and whether or not she could perhaps pause and invite their help. How obnoxious!

It Dragged Toward The End

I found the plot really gripping, and the characters were interesting although not well developed. But the narrator's dual-toned inflection began to grate on my nerves after awhile; the plot also began to fade into dreariness toward the end and I found myself no longer all that interested in how it would all turn out for our dear heroine.

I tried, earnestly tried to listen to the entire story but I just couldn’t, I gave up after 5 hours. The breathy, irritating narration combined with Laurel’s narcissistic personality and preoccupation with trivial details such as what each character wears, how each person makes her feel...(sigh!).
So irritating, so tedious.
