About this listen

“Mark Sullivan has done it again! The Last Green Valley is a compelling and inspiring story of heroism and courage in the dark days at the end of World War II.” --Kristin Hannah, number one New York Times best-selling author

From the author of the number one best seller Beneath a Scarlet Sky comes a new historical novel inspired by one family’s incredible story of daring, survival, and triumph.

In late March 1944, as Stalin’s forces push into Ukraine, young Emil and Adeline Martel must make a terrible decision: Do they wait for the Soviet bear’s intrusion and risk being sent to Siberia? Or do they reluctantly follow the wolves - murderous Nazi officers who have pledged to protect “pure-blood” Germans?

The Martels are one of many families of German heritage whose ancestors have farmed in Ukraine for more than a century. But after already living under Stalin’s horrifying regime, Emil and Adeline decide they must run in retreat from their land with the wolves they despise to escape the Soviets and go in search of freedom.

Caught between two warring forces and overcoming horrific trials to pursue their hope of immigrating to the West, the Martels’ story is a brutal, complex, and ultimately triumphant tale that illuminates the extraordinary power of love, faith, and one family’s incredible will to survive and see their dreams realized.

Critic reviews

“Narrator Will Damron shows his vocal range in this work of historical fiction, set in Ukraine during WWII. The cast is large, giving Damron ample opportunity to use his expertise in differentiating characters.… He smoothly slips from the third-person narrator to a variety of voices and accents, making listeners feel present as the dramatic events unfold.” AudioFile Magazine

Wanted to Finish It, But Didn't Want it to End!

Beneath the Scarlet Sky is one of my favorite books and I wasn't sure The Last Green Valley would live up to my expectations. It surpassed them! The story keeps you on the edge of your seat. The narration is excellent. I hope there will be another historical fiction book from Mark Sullivan in the works.

Exceptional

What an excellent book! One of the best I've read this year. Mark Sullivan is an exceptional story-teller revealing what happens to those that have gone through life's struggles. This book took the life of Emil and Adeline Martel and showed their struggles and life's triumph's. It showed us the true grit and resilience that we can be made if we just keep our faith. Such a good book and when it ended, I thought I wish it wasn't over. Rarely do I give a book 5-stars, but I would give this one more. Exceptional.

The hope of the bee keeper and the lasting and changing effect on Emile.

I thought at first that we'd never get out of the wagon but persevered and was happy I did. a remarkable story with a life lesson about positivity when I needed it most.

Perseverance/ Extreme Endurance for American Dream

I didnt think Author Mark Sullivan could equal/surpass the story he brought us with Scarlet Sky. The story of the Martells & their numerous struggles and setbacks, reinforced by rocksteady hope is astounding. Sullivan has written/shared another masterpiece of life to the world.

thoroughly entertaining and inspiring tale

As an old cold warrior who spent six years in the shadow of the iron curtain, and 21 years striving to understand it and the lives of those on the other side, I found this book immensely enlightening and enjoyable. Mr Sullivan weaves a great story out of vignettes of family history, and Audible does its typically competent job of bringing the text to life.
