Story
Cassie Andrews works in a New York City bookshop, shelving books, making coffee for customers, and living an unassuming, ordinary life. Until the day one of her favorite customers—a lonely yet charming old man—dies right in front of her. Cassie is devastated. She always loved his stories, and now she has nothing to remember him by. Nothing but the last book he was reading. But this is no ordinary book… It is the Book of Doors. Inscribed with enigmatic words and mysterious drawings, it promises Cassie that any door is every door. You just need to know how to open them.

A great story with a tight plot and characters that you love and understand. It’s hard to believe that this is the author’s first book. I’m looking forward to more from him.

Story
Cal Sounder is a detective working for the police on certain very sensitive cases. So when he’s called in to investigate a homicide at a local apartment, he’s surprised by the routineness of it all. But when he arrives on scene, Cal soon learns that the victim—Roddy Tebbit, an otherwise milquetoast techie—is well over seven feet tall. And although he doesn’t look a day over thirty, he is ninety-one years old. Tebbit is a Titan—one of this dystopian, near-future society’s genetically altered elites. And this case is definitely Cal’s thing.

Classic noir mystery with a touch of sci-fi.
I liked the touches of humor. The story was convoluted(like a good noir) and sometimes hard to follow, but it all made sense in the end.
It’s a good read.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

I’m so glad it’s over.

I REALLY had a hard time finishing this book. I wanted to give it a real chance so I can discuss it with friends. The writing is good and most characters are fleshed out, but the plot slogs along. It’s basically this: Claire and Jaime are so awesomely sexy that everyone they meet wants to rape them. They even rape and beat each other, but it’s excused because it’s in the past and that’s just how people were. Violence is excusable and even sexy, but gay sex is for the evil character. Claire is from the 20th century, but other than warning friends to grow potatoes and using modern curse words, she doesn’t make much use of it.
The book is meant to be steamy, but I was not turned on at all.
I will say that I enjoyed some of the side characters and the dialogue between them and Claire. Overall though, I am very glad to be done with it and put it away!
The narrator did a good job, especially with imbuing feeling into the dialogue.

Story
In Daretana’s greatest mansion, a high imperial officer lies dead—killed, to all appearances, when a tree erupted from his body. Even here at the Empire’s borders, where contagions abound and the blood of the leviathans works strange magical changes, it’s a death both terrifying and impossible. Assigned to investigate is Ana Dolabra, a detective whose reputation for brilliance is matched only by her eccentricities. Rumor has it that she wears a blindfold at all times, and that she can solve impossible cases without even stepping outside the walls of her home.

Hundreds of years ago, the last humans on Earth boarded the Exodus Fleet in search of a new home among the stars. After centuries spent wandering empty space, their descendants were eventually accepted by the well-established species that govern the Milky Way. But that was long ago. Today, the Exodus Fleet is a living relic, the birthplace of many, yet a place few outsiders have ever visited. As many Exodans leave for alien cities or terrestrial colonies, those who remain are left to ponder their own lives and futures.

I have lived all three of the books in this series. A mix of cultural anthropology and sci-fi. Chambers makes you love each of the characters and gives them the depth of real people.
The books remind me of a mix of all my favorite sci-fi shows: Firefly, Star Trek, and Stargate, to name a few.

Story
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

I loved “The Martian”, so I got “Artemis” right away. The science of moon life is fun and interesting and the pace is fast.
I had a hard time liking Jazz, the main character. She is sarcastic and makes all the wrong decisions. It was hard to keep rooting for her even when she was doing something good.
All in all, this book was a quick read with a few good chuckles and interesting ideas. I just missed the good guy character of Mark from “The Martian”.

This is probably a great book and is read well. When I bought it I didn't realize it was abridged. The plot is hard to follow and you miss out on all the extra pieces that build the characters. Too bad.
