Publisher's summary

"[Narrator Julia] Whelan's performance is unforgettable in this darkly romantic fantasy about one young woman cursed always to be forgotten.... Her depiction of the darkness is smooth with a low cadence, capturing listeners' attention and their heart strings." (Booklist)

In the vein of The Time Traveler’s Wife and Life After Life, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is New York Times best-selling author V. E. Schwab’s genre-defying tour de force.

A life no one will remember. A story you will never forget.

France, 1714: In a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever - and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.

But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name.

Featured Article: The top 100 fantasy listens of all time

When compiling our list of the best fantasy listening out there, we immediately came up against the age-old question: Is this fantasy or science fiction? The distinction is not as clear as you may think. Dragons, elves, and wizards are definitely fantasy, but what about wizards that also fly space ships? (Looking at you, Star Wars.) For the sake of fantasy purity, the top 100 fantasy listens include the best audio works in all manner of fantasy subgenres.

Editor's Pick

A genre-bending epic
I’ve been in a continuous cycle of listening ruts throughout the pandemic. It’s become increasingly hard to predict my listening “moods,” and I’ve found, more often than not, that I’m comforted by relistening to old, familiar stories. That being said, V.E. Schwab’s new fantasy checks four of my boxes that remain consistent no matter what havoc the pandemic is wreaking on my listening life: time travel ✅, romance ✅, hidden bookstores ✅, Julia Whelan ✅. I cannot wait to get lost in time with Addie LaRue, and uncover all her secrets. —Katie O., Audible Editor

Thoroughly engrossing! Narration was fabulous!

This is my first review and I just wanted to say that I absolutely loved this audio. Julia Whelan is a fantastic narrator and really brought the characters and setting to life. Loved the original storyline. Highly recommend!

yeah...not bad.

Narrator was great, story was pretty good, it dragged on a little and then left me with a "is that???" reaction at the end

Wonderful masterpiece

Beautiful tale of a passionate girl who sells her soul in a moment of weakness. I was able to move thru each chapter with ease. Felt especially relevant since my birthday is July 29.

Far from Invisible

The best book I have read in 2021! There’s love and romance, life and death, dark and light, fiction and truth, sorrow and joy, and so much creativity. You won’t stop thinking about Addie!

Anything but invisible

Addie is as memorable as Gabaldon’s Claire Fraser, George R R Martin’s Arya, Neil Gaiman’s Shadow. And like Henry, I will never forget her. Schwab gets better and better. This one belongs on your shelf.

A sweeping story weaving effortlessly through centuries, of a girl forever caught in the moment she’s in, and the foolish god who trifled with her.

Ruining me for future books.

I wish I could rewrite any other reviews of books I’ve made on audible thus far so this one could be higher. It is thoughtful and creative and tender and poetic, clever and insightful, imaginative and unique. If you have been looking for a book where you get lost in the world, this one is it. I would rank it under the top five I’ve ever listened to on audible and I’ve been a subscriber off and on for years.

Long but Worthwhile

This story feels like it could go on forever, and for Addie it just might. The narration was beautiful and the story of Addie should be read with such beauty. While the middle got a little muddy the ending couldn’t be better.
