Story
Christians know what Jesus Christ has done — but who is he? What is his deepest heart for his people, weary and faltering on their journey toward heaven? Jesus said he is "gentle and lowly in heart." This audiobook reflects on these words, opening up a neglected yet central truth about who he is for sinners and sufferers today.

I wanted to love it.

I’m clearly in the minority here but the book was a struggle. The overly intellectual word choices at time was a turn off and took what was meant to be a simple book and disrupted the flow. The premise is fine but felt like it was stretched too far into being a full book. There was no clear flow of the narrative but felt more like a collection of sermons on one topic that had been grouped together. The performance/reading was too slow and at times felt lumbering. This book felt like an overly intellectual filter of Brennan Manning’s far superior “The Ragamuffin Gospel”

Very good but needs a sequel.
Reviewed: 01-26-24
This is a very good book and takes you through a “theology of technology” and assesses how our phones and social media/online activities affect us. That said, it really needs a companion book that is a “how to” to apply what is discussed and addressed in this book. It is definitely worth a listen and is deeper (in a good way) then you may expect but if you are expecting a “how to” book this is not it. But the writer is great and the book is great so I would love to have a sequel or companion book on next steps or “how tos”.

A Hobbit, A Wardrobe and a Great War

Story
The First World War laid waste to a continent and brought about the end of innocence — and the end of faith. Unlike a generation of young writers who lost faith in the God of the Bible, however, J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis found that the Great War deepened their spiritual quest. Both men served as soldiers on the Western Front, survived the trenches, and used the experience of that conflict to ignite their Christian imagination.

Story
The acidly funny first book starring the subversive sleuth in one of the most successful mystery series of all time. Fletch is an investigative reporter whose methods are a little unorthodox. Currently he's living on the beach. He's taking more than a little flak from his editor. She doesn't appreciate his style. Or the expense account items he's racking up. Or his definition of the word "deadline". Or the divorce lawyers who keep showing up at the office. So when multimillionaire Alan Stanwyk offers Fletch the job of a lifetime, which could be worth a fortune, he's intrigued.

So I loved the movies and wanted to try the book. I knew they would have differences but the book is hampered by Fletch being an unlivable jerk. He is nasty to everyone and seems to want the reader to think that is funny. Once you get to him sleeping with a 15 year old girl it’s just not an enjoyable book or character.

Story
What type of person comes to mind when you think of an introvert, and what type of person comes to mind when you think of a leader? The two words are rarely linked together. Society often labels people with introverted personalities as at least one of the following: quiet, shy, reserved, or timid. While at the same time leaders are described as dominant, passionate, outgoing, and ambitious.

Basic principles and not really about introverts.
Reviewed: 08-17-22
The author is an introvert but the book is just a list of some basic leadership principles. Not bad but there are much better options. And this really had nothing to do with being an introvert.

Story
Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In our daily lives, too many of us favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt. We listen to opinions that make us feel good, instead of ideas that make us think hard. We see disagreement as a threat to our egos, rather than an opportunity to learn.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Compared to The Bomber Mafia, this is a rambling and unclear set of stories. Honestly the podcast season where Gladwell addresses these stories is better than the book. As always Gladwell’s vocals are excellent but he never sticks the landing on what point he is making. If you’re a Gladwell fan it’s worth a listen but not a good choice for your first Gladwell book.
