Story
On an ordinary Monday morning, Ariel Cafferty's phone buzzes with a disturbing text message. Something’s happened. I need to see you. Meet me under the candelabra tree ASAP. The words would be jarring from anyone, but the sender is the only man she ever loved. And it's been several years since she learned he died. Seeing Drew’s name pop up is heart-stopping. Ariel’s gut says it can’t be real. But she goes to the tree anyway. She has to. Nobody shows.

Excellent story, but one of the male narrators sounded like he was reading a movie trailer from the 90s.
Reviewed: 10-15-24
I really enjoyed the story and most of the narrators. One of the male narrators often spoke in such a breathy, dramatic way that I cringed every time he started a chapter. His voice reminded me of the guy who used to do all of the voiceover for dramatic movie trailers.

We live in a close-knit community. Thirty houses surrounding a square of garden that is perfect for our kids. We congregate here on major holidays, each family bringing a plate and sharing food and conversation. It’s in the garden that I first met her. The woman who would worm her way into my family and piece by piece tear it apart.

Too Many “Secrets” Made It Comical
Reviewed: 09-06-24
This book was very frustrating. Each of the main characters mentioned that they had “a secret” at least 30 times within the book. It got to the point that it was rather comical how often they said it. I think once it’s been established that a character is harboring a secret, you don’t need to be a dead horse.
I finished it just because I have to finish things that I start, but I was very disappointed with this book.

Interesting premise, but it was too frustrating
Reviewed: 02-08-22
I really wanted this book to be better than it was. A very interesting premise, but it fell short in my opinion. There were moments in the story that did not seem to fit. It just seemed as though certain ideas or moments happened to be provocative but they didn’t propel the form story forward.
I begrudgingly listened to the entire story hoping that it would be more entertaining than it was.

Extremely frustrating to listen to because of the writing style and the narrator’s choice
Reviewed: 01-15-22
This was an absolute painful book to listen to. I usually love this narrator, but when he was reading the different emails and all of the transcripts he was very monotone and it was so hard to follow what he was saying. Perhaps if it had been read by different actors for each character, it would have been easier to follow. It was just overall disappointing

Too many characters.
Reviewed: 11-09-21
There were too many characters to keep track of in the story. No clear plot that was easy to follow. There were so many people and different side stories I gave up. Usually even if I don’t like a book I listen until the end. This one was an exception I just couldn’t follow all the different storylines and keep track of the many different intertwining characters. There weren’t any characters that I could invest my interest in.

After years of traditional treatments and therapies, Derrick still suffers from pain ineluctable enough that it has become his identity. Then he hears of an exclusive, very private New York clinic that promises relief. It comes highly recommended by a friend. The multisession remedy unfolds as a sensorial wonder that’s so illuminating it’s enough to bring tears to Derrick’s eyes. It’s all working so well. So unexpectedly well.

Started slow, the middle was slow, the end was slow. It was a pointless book that I only continued to listen to because it was less than an hour long. The ending was very abrupt. I rarely write negative reviews, but this one is because this audiobook was really a waste of time.

Odd story and sound quality is awful

Weird story premise. Really could use a prologue to clue you into what is happening. Feels like you are starting in the middle of a story. Jumps from past to present with no clear notification. Too hard to follow and I lost interest after the first 20 minutes.
VERY hard to hear most characters speak because they are very far from the microphone.

Each volume of four 30-minute histories will dig into the petty name-calling and grumbling grudges that led to many of the world’s greatest advancements, all delivered with a cheeky sense of humor.
