I really enjoyed this book. Not only was it full of action and accurate military tactics but the characters, while morally gray, were engaging and believable. I’m bad a writing reviews but I can’t recommend this be enough. Looking forward to the next one

I went into this book thinking it would be an archaeological thriller instead I got a month in the life of some incredibly dumb and shitty people who basically all had the same personality that only looked for treasure for about three chapters.
From the start the main character’s decisions don’t make a lot of sense, like agreeing to work for a known con artist. Then as a geologist spends her time mostly taking pictures. I understand that she had some social barriers to deal with but they hired her as a geologist and never really used her as such. Makes no sense
There were also too many extra things that didn’t add to the overall story and made it drag. Every meal and every trip to the club was very boring to read about. And why did we have to know about every time Sam needed to pee? Add in the attempted assault that the book just didn’t need and you get the confusing mess that was Fool’s Gold.
My other issue was the over expressed social setting. I get the author was going for the culture and time period but the fact that he constantly brought up ethnicities, skin color, and gender made the book feel like he needed and excuse to be as raciest and sexist as possible. It was painful to hear every other paragraph.
Finally, why was a male narrator used when the main character is female? It would have made more sense to have either a female narrator or at least a male who could do better or more female voices. Sometimes it was difficult to know who was talking because all the women sounded the same.

This was not the archeological thriller I was expecting. I don’t even know how best to describe this awful collection of words as a book. For starters, the characters were inconsistent, foolish, and all basically the same. Their personalities shifted constantly to where I couldn’t tell them apart, they made stupid choice after stupid choice that a normal person would never make given the circumstances, and their limited of what was “wrong” changed from sentence to sentence. I’d it wrong to mess with a church? Not to one character but that same character wouldn’t say the name Jesus or even look at his bones two seconds later. Are there alligators in the river? Yes, but swimming in that river should be fine. Sure we are being held hostage by mercs, let’s just have sex in a tent. None of it made sense!
Additional note; the only reason the two characters got together is because Casey was the ONLY female character on the book. So stupid.
The ending was the worst of it. We spent the whole book looking for gold only to find the bones of Jesus and we are to believe that our non-religious characters were so moved by the priest’s speech that they won’t relive their discovery? Authors should know better than to shove religion down our throats like that. It’s just rude and it ruined any chance you had to end the story well.
The narration was also badly done. His tone was all over the place, his voices were inconsistent, and he constantly paused randomly in spots that should not have had pauses.
Do not read/listen to this book

This is always be my favorite story
Reviewed: 10-10-24
I read this book for the first time back in 2007 for a school book report and loved it right away. The story is unique and engaging, the characters are interesting, and the plot wasn’t that of a normal fantasy book, at least at the time. Eric and cindella showed me, a kid about the same age at the time, that sometimes it was best to try new things and to stand up for what you think is right. Epic was then and is now my favorite book of all time.
Now to the actual review. The only downside to this book was the narration. The narrator didn’t really use different voices for the characters and his inflection was a little flat which made it difficult to tell how the characters were feeling. BUT if you like Epic you can overlook it for the sake of the story
Seriously, read this book. It’s really good

Jack Reilly's next mission will be his most daunting one yet. The retired Delta operator is whisked away to the Nepali capital of Kathmandu to investigate the outrageous claims of an impossibly old, seemingly deranged Sherpa. The hospitalized man has delivered a confusing and provocative warning to his caretakers, cautioning them to be wary of the "curse of Shangri-La."

Great take on a mystery

Overall a great story. I really enjoyed the pace and the action sequences and I’ve enjoyed how a little more ‘magic’ and supernatural elements have been introduced in this book as well as the previous.
My one critique is that if feel like the author is pulling a lot from the UNCHARTED game series. Jack has gone from finding el Darado to shamballa which is the same order of the first two uncharted games. He even found a nazi sub in the Amazon and yetis in the Himalayas…just like in uncharted.
That observation aside I have enjoyed this book and all the other Jack Reilly books and continue to read the rest of them. I can’t wait for what comes next
