A touch to boring
Reviewed: 01-16-25
Found this instalment rather tedious at times and I confess I have begun to grow weary of some of the series conceits as a few have been used a little often. Either way this story was a touch too lacklustre and boring for me, and the middle felt rather endless and uninteresting. I am also hoping the Moriarty situation wraps up soon too.

Story
Winter 1924. When Lady Eleanor Swift unexpectedly finds herself a guest of the reclusive Duke of Auldwyke, she’s determined to enjoy Christmas with all the trimmings at his sprawling manor house. And that includes kisses under the mistletoe and cozying up by the fire with her fiancé, dashing detective Hugh Seldon. Instead, the season of goodwill turns frosty as she finds the Duke’s studious secretary, Mr Porritt, dead in the storeroom. Clasped in his chilly hand is a golden pendant in the shape of a rose.

Story
When Christopher “Kit” Collins’ father dies, he is devastated, but he must swiftly take on the title of Duke of Kingsacre and all the responsibility that comes with it. Including the care of his very young, illegitimate half-sister, who is now his ward. He is very upset when he discovers the governess his father hired for the child just before his death is Sarah Carlton. Sarah is equally disturbed by the arrival of her new employer, as she and Kit once had an unpleasant encounter when she was at her lowest point.

Reviewed: 08-25-24
This story has very little plot, and very little actually happens. The teaser was good, but it quickly shifts to mourning and grief, not exactly romantic. The conversations between characters are so anachronistic, and sprinkled with so much modern pop psychology, I do not think this author is for me.

Story
Taking on the responsibilities that come with being Lady Lyndhurst, Stella is eager to embrace yuletide traditions in the Edwardian English countryside and use her strong social influence for good. Her world becomes so consumed with starting a horse farm charity for the holidays that she barely notices the usual oddities attached to her upper crust lifestyle. At least, not until items vanish from her bedroom and maligned housekeeper, Mrs. Nelson, becomes seriously ill—only to be found dead in the cold on Mistletoe Lane.

A superbly heartwarming cozy Christmas mystery.
Reviewed: 12-23-23
All in all a thoroughly Christmas read that deftly incorporated historical holiday traditions with some slight sleuthing. It manages to maintain all the warmth of the season while still having enough questions to propel that aspect of the narrative forward.
In fact in the end I would characterize this more as a Christmas tale than strictly a murder mystery.

The Marquess of Winterbourne has long been guided by his Rules of the Rogue, but as spy for the Crown, his next mission will break every single one. Sent to the wilds of Cornwall to beguile secrets from a lady, the last thing this rogue expects is to unearth his own buried heart. Miss Tamsyn Penrose remains far from impressed by London scoundrel Lord Winterbourne, preferring a wild gallop over the moors to sinful lips and fulsome flattery. But as danger lurks and her prejudice ebbs, she uncovers a man of contradictions, a man who awakens her forgotten fire.

Too short, did not give enough time for the story to build, and thus it didn’t breathe any life (or believability) into the romance.

Underwhelming story so poorly narrated.
Reviewed: 05-24-19
I am not entirely sure if its the absolutely terrible narrator or the story that left me so underwhelmed with book three of the Rose Gardner mysteries. I don't understand how they could leave this version up on audible. The narrator might be the one of the worst I have ever heard. She sounds like a pack a day smoker in late middle age, not exactly like the sheltered inexperienced 24 year old Rose is supposed to be. If that wasn't bad enough the narrator mispronounced so many words that it became extremely distracting, and repeatedly takes you out of the story.
