Story
Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations. This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.

Story
General George Patton needed a miracle. In December 1944, the Allies found themselves stuck. Rain had plagued the troops daily since September, turning roads into rivers of muck, slowing trucks and tanks to a crawl. A thick ceiling of clouds had grounded American warplanes, allowing the Germans to reinforce. The sprint to Berlin had become a muddy, bloody stalemate, costing thousands of American lives. Patton seethed, desperate for some change, any change, in the weather.

My Dad fought under Patton, so this was a story I needed to know. It was well written and well executed in this audiobook.

I liked the rather Quick paced coverage of a very great deal of India’s History, including through much of 2023. While I may not have been exposed to all the history, I think the book gave me a good overview of Indian history which helps me better understand a lot of what I observed on a recent 3-week trip to India. And, if I choose to do so, with this overview in mind, I can now study India’s history in more detail via other books and international news sources.

Story
Between 1917 and 1921 a devastating struggle took place in Russia following the collapse of the Tsarist empire. The doomed White alliance of moderate socialists and reactionary monarchists stood little chance against Trotsky’s Red Army and the single-minded Communist dictatorship under Lenin.

The history told in detail.

While I am a detail person, the details of the book became almost unbearable to hear, but it is those details that make the entire debacle of the Russian revolution so important to remember, particularly in light of Russia’s recent history.
