Story
The ruling Asharites of Al-Rassan have come from the desert sands, but over centuries, seduced by the sensuous pleasures of their new land, their stern piety has eroded. The Asharite empire has splintered into decadent city-states led by warring petty kings. King Almalik of Cartada is on the ascendancy, aided always by his friend and advisor, the notorious Ammar ibn Khairan - poet, diplomat, soldier - until a summer afternoon of savage brutality changes their relationship forever.

Extremely well written with a worthy performance. I do wish however that there was an attached PDF glossary of character names. I had some difficulty keeping track of who was who.

Superb writing and the performance was one of the best I have heard. The narrator outdid himself with this series and was a perfect match for this amazing series . Highly recommend The Book of The New Sun. It's a series you will be sure to listen to more than once.

Wish they just stuck with the one narrator and dropped the inconsistent production.

Story
Gates of Fire puts you at the side of valiant Spartan warriors in 480 BC for the bloody, climactic battle at Thermopylae. There, a few hundred of Sparta’s finest sacrificed their lives to hold back the invading Persian millions. The time they bought enabled the Greeks to rally - saving, according to ancient historian Herodotus, “Western democracy and freedom from perishing in the cradle.” How did the Spartans accomplish this superhuman feat? This is what the King of Persia hopes to learn from the sole Spartan survivor.

Story
Joseph K. is an Everyman. His inconsequence makes doubly strange his arrest by an officer of the court, made with no formal charges or explanation. Disoriented and consumed with guilt for a "crime" he does not understand, Josef K. must justify his life to a "court" with which he cannot communicate. Through the court's relentless bureaucratic proceedings and absurd juxtapositions of different hypotheses of cause and effect, the whole rational structure of the world is undermined.

Interesting story but I must admit I don't get the reverence for this book. Seems the whole draw to the book is the fact the charges against K are never given. I suspect the charges against K are some connection to original sin ? As for the performance, the narrator's voice seemed to fit the story quite well but I did find the add-on voice overs of translation add on's distracting.
