Story
This is Kazuo Ishiguro's profoundly compelling portrait of a butler named Stevens. Stevens, at the end of three decades of service at Darlington Hall, spending a day on a country drive, embarks as well on a journey through the past in an effort to reassure himself that he has served humanity by serving the "great gentleman," Lord Darlington. But lurking in his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord Darlington's "greatness," and much graver doubts about the nature of his own life.

I can't explain how this book managed to make me feel all the emotions I did during my experience listening to it and yet I broke down on my commute to work multiple times. Anyways, it's delightful and refreshing.

I feel like the characters have developed, the story line has grown more complicated and the debasement has... debased even more. This is the version of a fantasy adventure I've always wanted. Thank you

Story
Lou is a lonely librarian who spends her days in the dusty archives of the Historical Institute. When an unusual field assignment comes her way, she jumps at the chance to travel to a remote island in northern Ontario, where she will spend the summer cataloguing a library that belonged to an eccentric 19th-century colonel. Eager to investigate the estate’s curious history, she is shocked to discover that the island has one other inhabitant: a bear. Lou’s imagination is soon overtaken by the island’s past occupants, whose deep fascination with bears gradually becomes her own.

Story
A bet between the gods Hermes and Apollo leads them to grant human consciousness and language to a group of dogs overnighting at a Toronto veterinary clinic. Suddenly capable of more complex thought, the pack is torn between those who resist the new ways of thinking, preferring the old dog ways, and those who embrace the change. The gods watch from above as the dogs venture into their newly unfamiliar world, as they become divided among themselves, as each struggles with new thoughts and feelings.

A look into what it means to be conscious and mortal, this book delivers a potent pontification with an unusual cast. the characters are brilliant and the point of view, if not the narrative, being of the dog is a compelling way to convey the story. i recommend this book to anyone who thinks about life, death or the meaning of any of it.

Story
Why do people dodge responsibility when things fall apart? Why the parade of public figures unable to own up when they screw up? Why the endless marital quarrels over who is right? Why can we see hypocrisy in others but not in ourselves? Are we all liars? Or do we really believe the stories we tell? Renowned social psychologists Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson take a compelling look into how the brain is wired for self-justification.

Story
In the United States, teenagers can focus on one task for only sixty-five seconds at a time, and office workers average only three minutes. Like so many of us, Johann Hari was finding that constantly switching from device to device and tab to tab was a diminishing and depressing way to live. He tried all sorts of self-help solutions—even abandoning his phone for three months—but nothing seemed to work. So Hari went on an epic journey across the world to interview the leading experts on human attention—and he discovered that everything we think we know about this crisis is wrong.

My therapist recommended this book

I was discussing with my therapist the stress of being a new parent, coping with anxiety and generally feeling disconnected from society and the things that used to bring me joy. This book was one in the list that was recommended and, I have to admit, the only one that seemed relevant and thoughtful. I would compare Johann Hari's writing style to that of Niel Strauss and the content a bit like Malcom Gladwell. It is investigative, full of introspection, cross analysis and most of all: relevance. I recommend this book.

Story
Man’s Search for Meaning is the chilling yet inspirational story of Viktor Frankl’s struggle to hold on to hope during the unspeakable horrors of his years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

I'm impressed by the efficacy of the language and deep thoughtfulness of this man and his simple delivery method of logic through questions. fantastic stuff which must be taught to more people, especially in the united states

I was skeptical that I would enjoy an auto biography as much as this; the last one I read was e.e. cummings The Enormous Room and i was disappointed.
Michelle Robinson Obama has left me feeling silly for doubting her and delighted that I read the whole thing. Her perspective and experiences have enlightened me to a level of grace that few humans poses while maintaining honesty and truth in all of her recounts. She provides refreshing insight into the life she lives while inspiring me to be a better person.
I'm transfixed by her perception of her mother's parenting style while in awe at how she managed hers even through 8 years of their young ones' lives, a very significant amount at that transformative age. i am seeing confirming echos of Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers theory that advocacy and a network of sorr support breed healthy adults. similarly the message of modeling the pai lesso person you want to see in the world as it's recommended by Michaeleen Doucleff in her parenting book. She is so the parent i want to be.
to say the least, i would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. everyone could become a little bit more with a little more Michelle in their lives; more complainant, more informed, and more yourself.
