Awesome Narration

Surprisingly good story that takes place around the process of choosing a new pope. Worth it. Not overly religious or ideological, which I have zero patience for. The narrator is amazing!

Story
A single mother turns up dead at the bottom of the river that runs through town. Earlier in the summer, a vulnerable teenage girl met the same fate. They are not the first women lost to these dark waters, but their deaths disturb the river and its history, dredging up secrets long submerged. Left behind is a lonely 15-year-old girl. Parentless and friendless, she now finds herself in the care of her mother's sister, a fearful stranger who has been dragged back to the place she deliberately ran from - a place to which she vowed she'd never return.

TRIED and TRIED and TRIED but couldn't finish.

I'd skip this if you're looking for something cogent with high stakes. The writing and narration are excellent, but the story is sprawling (especially for what seems like a small town), filled with too many characters that sound the same, and it goes nowhere. The pace is slow and drawn out. Add that to an extensive cast of characters and the constant time-jumps; I just couldn't follow. There were hopes here and there I was catching on to a thread, but alas, no. It's as if PH wanted to write one story about the 500-yr history of women accused of being witches and sent to their deaths in The Drowning Pool, and her editor insisted she include a current murder mystery of an author writing a book about it and dying in the same place. Great idea, but I just couldn't follow. There were no characters to really care about or root for and no immediate stakes in the game. I stopped torturing myself and gave up. PH's recent book, A SLOW FIRE BURNING, is spot-on, with excellent writing and pace. That's why I jumped to buy this book. I still look forward to PH's upcoming book.

Story
When a tragic accident leaves nurse Amelia Winn deaf, she spirals into a depression that ultimately causes her to lose everything that matters - her job; her husband, David; and her stepdaughter, Nora. Now, two years later, and with the help of her hearing dog, Stitch, she is finally getting back on her feet. But when she discovers the body of a fellow nurse in the dense bush by the river, deep in the woods near her cabin, she is plunged into a disturbing mystery that could shatter the carefully reconstructed pieces of her life all over again.

New perspective/deaf protagonist

Template-ish but good enough story, likable characters, fresh perspective having deaf characters and always easy to listen to Whelan.

Story
After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

Narration is excellent, plus, a must-have for more series background

Always a treat when a narrator can perform so many characters so well. Some reviewers say he’s over-the-top - I can see that, and at times I had to I lower the volume when Blackthorn and Yabushige become bellicose, which is often. But Ralph Lister is now a fav. On par with narrators of Cutting for Stone or The Power of One.

Not put off by narration on my second attempt and finished in two days!

When I first downloaded this book a few years ago, I couldn’t reconcile the first narrator’s cheerful voice with the gravity of the events. I decided to try again because Scorsese’s upcoming movie, which unlike the book, reveals the culprits from the start and the story unfold through the killers’ eyes. Part 1 is about the Osage and the murders, Part two covers the investigation and the birth of the FBI, and Part 3 covers a reporter’s attempt to fill-in holes left by the FBI’s investigation to get to the whole truth. Riveting.
