In the winter palace, the King's new physician has more enemies than she at first realises. But then she also has more remedies to hand than those who wish her ill can know about. In another palace across the mountains, in the service of the regicidal Protector General, the chief bodyguard, too, has his enemies. But his enemies strike more swiftly, and his means of combating them are more traditional. Spiralling round a central core of secrecy, deceit, love, and betrayal.

Amazing experiment
Reviewed: 07-25-21
Banks is experimenting heavily with this one. While it is a great book I don’t belive it will make any sense without the knowledge from previous Culture books. I would also suggest not jumping on this in excitement after finishing Excession. I did and it through me off for a good while, since they are more or less polar opposites.

Story
The planet Quinta is pocked by ugly mounds and covered by a spiderweb-like network. It is a kingdom of phantoms and of a beauty afflicted by madness. In stark contrast, the crew of the spaceship Hermes represents a knowledge-seeking Earth. As they approach Quinta, a dark poetry takes over and leads them into a nightmare of misunderstanding.

Simply nothing like it
Reviewed: 03-29-21
Stanislaw Lem is one of my favorite sci fi authors and this book does not disappoint. A strange, though provoking story that kept a sense of wonder throughout the book. Certainly not a book for everyone but for people who love sci fi filled with ideas that stick long after the book is done, this surely is a book to read.

Refreshing science
Reviewed: 08-10-20
Dr. Soh is presenting uncontroversial science about humans and it is very refreshing. Listening to this book is a ”emperor has no clothes” moment. The complexities of trying to explain gender as socially constructed and forcing the different pieces into an incoherent whole is gone, and what we’re left with is something clear that actually makes sense. Of course, the book cover hard problems that has no simple answers but Debra is enlightening us that we can’t just ignore those problems. We need to know more.

The second Dune installment explores new developments on the planet Arrakis, with its intricate social order and strange, threatening environment. Dune Messiah picks up the story of the man known as Muad'Dib, heir to a power unimaginable, bringing to fruition an ambition of unparalleled scale: the centuries-old scheme to create a superbeing who reigns not in the heavens but among men. But the question is: DO all paths of glory lead to the grave?

Good-not-great book, not as fond of the narration

Dune saga is amazing. Narrators are so and so.
Reviewed: 03-01-20
If one is coming from Dune and not having read all the books before, this book might feel like a let down. The tone is different because Frank Herbert is exploring something different than in the first: what happens with power after the intoxication of all the glory is gone and we are left with the hangover? F one is not expecting ”more of the same” but can see Dune: Messiah for what it is, it is an excellent book and also a stepping stone for the books to come.
Unfortunately, the narration varies wildly from ”really good” to ”what were they thinking?”. Luckily there’s more good than not good but Dune deserves better.
