For men
Reviewed: 01-08-25
Listen, I love an zombie book, but I will say this series is definitely for men written by a man.
The good: the action is great, the story is fun, and I genuinely liked the character. The banter is good and the lore is interesting. I had a hard time getting into the dog POV chapters, but ended up actuly loving them. Hilarious of the narrator to give the dog a Dutch accent. I cringed at first but ended up loving it in the end. This series has a certain charm to it and it's hard not to like and root for the characters.
The bad: there are definitely parts I found hard to digest as a woman. There's definitely some good ol southern sexism at play, however I'd definitely call it benevolent. The same can go for the gay jokes and race relations. The author definitely tries to be inclusive, but often ends up creating characters that rely heavily on stereotypes. I can definitely tell her tried with the Native American characters, however some parts fell flat for me, in the end a lot of characters traits relied heavily on stereotype and surface level research. I also was pretty jarred hearing the author needlessly insert the N Word into one of his chapter quotes - that made me a bit uncomfortable because the quote felt forced and wasn't even relevent to the chapter, or all that particularly deep.
Then there's the way the author depicts women... Sure, he has some strong female characters, but every single one leans into the idea that all women are deep down sensitive creatures who want to be barefoot and pregnant-and none of them are entirely that dimensional.
Over all, this is definitely a dudes series for dudes (and women who don't care about the iffy representation, I suppose) and really doesn't need to be examined and scrutinized. It's not deep literature, it's an action packed, military themed zombie war series and I liked it.

Loved this one, it has a lot of great twists and turns, as well as a morally gray but synaothetic main character. SEMI SPOILERS: The open ended ending is haunting me. Which one was she!!??

I love all of Sarah's books and some times her characters are a little bit too big of push overs for me but I still enjoy the book. This one, the main character almost ruined the book for me. Self absorbed, repetitive and whiney. Of course I understand trauma, depression and anxiety, but it was difficult to have patience for her never ending unhappiness and negativity, even if it is pretty realistic to how some people react to the themes in this story. However, the book is great. It keeps you guessing but drops enough hints as to what's going on that it's exciting trying to put all the clues together. I love Sarah's survival thriller books so much, I just hope we get some more characters with a backbone (like in the Yacht!) in the next masterpiece she gifts us with.
