Clearly written by a man. Lots of derogatory language toward women. Terrible story line. Lots of gratuitous description of body parts. Bonus points for adjectives, but no points for actual dialogue or storyline.

The usual “poor Gina, her life is so sad, she doesn’t take care of herself and plays the martyr, she can’t see what’s clearly in front of her, and oh - the storyline with her ex husband NEVER ENDS.”
Not sure I can keep listening to this storyline. Unfortunate.

Decent story, as always. But in the usual fashion, when push comes to shove, morgan is a complete idiot at the end. She’s always too dense to see what’s actually happening, and at the end she gets all the accolades. Frustrating to listen to.

Connor is a moron, and the repetitive storyline of the entire family being implicated in things they didn’t do is getting very old. There is a lot of opportunity for Gwen to simply investigate cases and leave the family out of constant arrests and blame and bad press…I had to skip several chapters and just fast forward to the last few to wrap it up.

I was absolutely furious with this storyline pretty much from the halfway mark until the end. It only redeemed itself *somewhat* in the final 5 minutes.

I’ve listened to every one of these books the minute they came out, after finding the first four. I’ve loved every single one and am invested in every single character. This one was such a deviation from the norm, I could barely listen. I still disappointed in what was done to Jack’s storyline, and I’m furious on behalf of Hamsa, and I almost couldn’t forgive Ben’s storyline.

I think there are supposed to be 8 more books, right? Please, please do not throw curveballs like this again! My heart can’t take it.

Please stop adding story lines that make Gwen the subject of renewed public hatred again and again. It’s frustrating to listen to.

Where to start. I WANT to like these books. I feel committed at this point. I keep getting the next one, hoping the storylines will get better.

They don’t.

Harry and Alex are possibly the most useless “detectives” ever to have been written. The emotional scenes are so ridiculous, you can’t help but roll your eyes.

Dunlap and Evans are the only ones actually investigating. And it’s becoming more and more clear that the attempt is to replicate Bob Hoon and Tyler from the JD Kirk books, and it’s just a sad imitation.

Angus King again saves this book. But the actual “detective” story is awful. If you’ve got 1/2 a brain, you’ll know what’s happening about 1/3 of the way in. Then there’s the usual introduction of 3-4 unnecessary characters in an attempt to throw you off. And then the ending is anticlimactic and sudden.

I promise, I am TRYING to like this series. It’s almost like every book is a new level of patience in a game I didn’t sign up for

JD and Angus both deliver again - but I need to add the small caveat that not all Americans sound like Texans (as a matter of fact, not even all Texans sound like Texans 😅), and Floridians and midwesterners most definitely don’t. Now, I wouldn’t be able to do a Scottish accent if my life depended on it, so this is merely an amused observation! Love all of JD’s books and Angus’s narration.

We get it, the man has reflux. We get it, he likes Mexican food. Between the endless repetition of “his gut was churning” and “he wanted a burrito” and the existential dread internal monologue, it is REALLY difficult to like Fenchurch. Add the fact that he seems incapable of catching an offender, never slaps handcuffs on anyone and seemingly always gets taken down in a fight, it’s by sheer willpower that one will finish this book. I want to like this character, I really do. It’s not an easy task. Lastly, this story line was so convoluted and messy, if there had been a Cliff Notes version, I would’ve opted in.

It’s just unfortunately absolutely the wrong narrator. The delivery is so monotone, if you don’t pay close attention, you miss every climax, surprise, discovery. It’s the same tone of voice for “she went to buy a loaf of bread” and “he confessed to the murder.”

It doesn’t AT ALL go with the other two series, which is especially difficult given that we’ve met some of these characters before. While no one is expecting them to sound the same, delivered by a different narrator, one DOES expect their personalities to remain the same…and because of this delivery, they just don’t.

The monotony of the story telling makes the entire story…uninteresting.

I genuinely wanted to like it. I listened to this second book after the first to give it another shot, hoping it would grow on me. It definitely did not. Off to wait for Leslie or Zoe to make their next book debut!
