Publisher's summary
Viva Las Vengeance
All Bob Hoon ever wanted was a good whisky, and some peace and quiet.
But, when Hoon hears that his friend and MI5 agent, Miles Crabtree, has gone missing in the United States, he is dragged back into action once more.
The hunt leads him to the Florida Everglades, and into conflict with the violent locals, the terrifying wildlife, and a Sheriff with a sinister agenda of his own.
Carving a trail of destruction across America, Hoon crosses swords with a washed-out, Elvis-themed P.I. who might be his only chance of not only saving his friend, but of foiling a twisted conspiracy that could lead to the deaths of millions.
From the Highlands of Scotland, through the steamy dive bars of Florida, to the dazzling neon nightmare of Vegas, Hoon’s quest for justice will expose the rotten underbelly of the American Dream.
And he might just cause a major international incident along the way.
Stateside is the fifth book in the Robert Hoon Thrillers series by internationally bestselling author, JD Kirk. If you ever thought Jack Reacher should be Scottish and swear more often, this is the series for you!

Story
When Heather McKinley dreamed of becoming a doctor, she imagined curing sick kids and sporting pink stethoscopes. She never anticipated the sleepless nights, grueling exams, and endless labs. And she certainly never knew that her medical school earned the nickname Dead Med thanks to the tragic history of students overdosing on illegal drugs. But Heather would never consider doing anything like that. That is, until her longtime boyfriend dumps her, she finds herself failing anatomy, and her world starts to crumble.

Normally I am a HUGE fan
JD Kirk is one of my favorite writers, and Angus King is my favorite narrators. I have listened to audio books just because he narrates them. His Kryptonite is American accents. I can’t tell you what is missing. Some are so bad, it is like fingernails on a chalkboard. I don’t know how much of that affects how I view the characters in the book. Because all the American characters seem more like caricatures. There is the naive prostitute with a heart of gold, the corrupt red neck sheriff, and a private investigator “possessed” by Elvis. None of them feel like real people. This is a complete departure from every other JD Kirk book I’ve read, and I’ve read all of them multiple times. Even Bob Hoon seemed a caricature of Bob Hoon. He is just a big teddy bear with the facade of a curmudgeon.
Something is just off with this story. Maybe it is the poor accents and maybe it is the writing. I’m still a fan, but I will probably skip this book when I’m in the mood to listen to all of them again.

Such a fun listen
Though I am not a fan of the word ‘fuck’ as it generally is used with a threat, I have to admit that listening to Bob Hoon using the word, generally four times in each sentence, is just hilarious. JD Kirk has a way of putting words together to make you hang on to them, wanting to come back for more. Unlike DCI Logan series which has loads of humour, but can also be tense and serious, the Hoon stories, though with some serious content just make you laugh. The narrator, Angus King, is brilliant and sounds exactly how I imagined Hoon speaking when I read the first few books in the series.

Fantastic!
I was a little apprehensive about a Hoon story taking place in the US. Scotland has been such a big character in these books. But JD Kirk works his magic again and the book is brilliant! So many interesting characters. And Angus King again does HIS fabulous work narrating this with the different accents taking center stage.
Overall, a brilliant addition to the Hoon saga.

Bob Hoon is the best!
I couldn’t stop laughing throughout the book, as can be said for pretty much all of Kirk’s books, and especially those involving Bob Hoon! As always, Angus King absolutely kills it with the perfect narration. Something I loved about this book was Hoon’s perspective of the U.S. He is spot on, sadly. Also, IRIS had me laughing nearly equally as much as Bob. I love that he was brought back too. I cannot wait for the next book in the series! It almost doesn’t matter what the storyline is - it’s still guaranteed to have me damn near peeing myself!

Another Great Hoon Adventure
I became a fan of JD Kirk through his DCI Logan series and Hoon was one of the characters I always loved so it was great to see that this series was created. I have listened to all the DCI Logan series and have now completed the current titles of the Hoon series. As an American, this story in particular struck my funny bone. I was laughing so hard during the first few chapters describing Hoon’s impressions of Florida I had to pause the book several times. JD Kirk has provided me with hours of entertainment through these two series. I would be remiss to not give a shout out to Angus King who is one of my all time favorite narrators. Since I am all caught up with the Hoon and Logan series, I am now trying another narrated by Angus King by Andrew Raymond. Looking forward to the next Logan and Hoon adventures.
