It wasn’t spectacular. I won’t be listening to the second one in the series because the storyline fell flat. If you write a fantasy include more world building and development in an actual story.

Story
I’m a Gemini. Impulsive. Curious. Headstrong. A twin. Heir to a throne I know nothing about. And it turns out, I’m Fae. But of course, there’s a catch - all I have to do to claim my birthright is prove that I’m the most powerful supernatural in the whole of Solaria. And sure, technically that’s true, as I’m the daughter of the Savage King. But the bit they didn’t put in the brochure was that every single Fae in this Kingdom would claim my throne if they could.

A Great Winged One will soon arise and cast his fearsome shadow upon the land. And just as Night slays Day, and Day slays Night, so also shall another Black Witch rise to meet him, her powers vast beyond imagining. So foretells the greatest prophecy of the Gardnerian mages. Carnissa Gardner, the last prophesied Black Witch, drove back the enemy forces and saved her people during the Realm War. Now a new evil is on the horizon, and her granddaughter, Elloren, is believed to be Carnissa's heir—but utterly devoid of power in a society that prizes magical ability above nearly all else.

Nothing spectacular, not that I expected it. When will the producers who cast narrators learn that women don’t want to listen to elderly men narrate romance novels. Ugh.....

Story
For two years, England has been in the grip of Civil War. In Banbury, Oxfordshire, the Cavaliers hold the castle, the Roundheads want it back and the town is full of zealous Puritans. Consequently, the gulf between Captain Justin Ambrose and Abigail Radford, the sister of a fanatically religious shopkeeper, ought to be unbridgeable. The key to both the fate of the castle and that of Justin and Abigail lies in defiance...but will it be enough?

The story is the same as any other “Highlander” romance. The narrator does a good job but o have a hard time listening to romance novels read by old men.

Best Fantasy Romance series ever!
Reviewed: 03-12-19
If you like Fantasy Romance you will LOVE this series. No other series compares, believe me, I have read several. C. L. Wilson is an amazingly gifted author. I have devoured all of her books. I am impatiently waiting for more but you can’t rush perfection.
Note on the narration. I was hoping for an improvement after listening to the first book of the series and it wasn’t. She sounded like Jane Fonda (really!) spoke so fast, it felt really rushed. I hope the series gets a do over on the audio editions with a narrator (the same one please!) who has a younger voice and acting skills. The Weathermages of Mystral has a wonderful narrator. Tillie Hooper and Kate Rudd are also great narrators.

Great story! I love epic fantasies with romance, action, adventure, magic. I just recently discovered this author, I can't believe it took me so long. She can write a story about undying devotion and love like no author author. I can't wait wait to read the rest of her books. I LOVE the Weather Mages series as well!
p.s. The narration nearly ruined the book for me. After listening to both Weather Mages books with a high caliber narrator it's difficult to listen to one that is mediocre at best. Gravily voice for the narration and she does not have the skills for different character voices. Her voice for the main character, Ellysetta, was a horrible whiny voice that sounded like nails on a chalkboard. Really bad!
