Story
We are familiar with maps that outline all 50 states. And we are also familiar with the idea that the United States is an "empire", exercising power around the world. But what about the actual territories - the islands, atolls, and archipelagos - this country has governed and inhabited? In How to Hide an Empire, author Daniel Immerwahr tells the fascinating story of the United States outside the United States. In crackling, fast-paced prose, he reveals forgotten episodes that cast American history in a new light.

Story
The struggle between Rome and Carthage in the Punic Wars was arguably the greatest and most desperate conflict of antiquity. The forces involved and the casualties suffered by both sides were far greater than in any wars fought before the modern era, while the eventual outcome had far-reaching consequences for the history of the Western World, namely the ascendancy of Rome. An epic of war and battle, this is also the story of famous generals and leaders: Hannibal, Fabius Maximus, Scipio Africanus, and his grandson Scipio Aemilianus, who would finally bring down the walls of Carthage.

Reminded me of stories my parents used to relate to us about growing up on farms in rural North and West Texas. They were products on the Depressed; therefore, so were we! We met similar folks on annual trips growing up in North-central Arkansas. We knew characters like these. I do believe there were not so many "hucksters" or folks who would believe them ...

Story
Greg Donahue’s The Minuteman, tells the story of one of Newark’s native sons; ex-prizefighter and longtime Zwillman enforcer Sidney Abramowitz, a.k.a. Nat Arno, who took over leadership of the Minutemen in 1934 and made it his personal business to put an end to what he saw as the Bund’s “anti-American” activities. For six years, Arno and his crew of vigilantes battled Newark’s Nazis at every turn. The Minuteman is a story of the ethics of violence in the face of fascism; a forgotten legacy that is as relevant now as it was nearly a hundred years ago.

For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

The Good News Revealed Again!

I'm dictating this review because I have a different time collecting my thoughts with the cancer. You see, I found out I have myeloma (cancer in my brain) back on the 6th of October this year. It turned out to be more several weeks ago; and it's curriculum that I just finished reading this book as I began my Radiation and Chemotherapy treatments.
Nabeel Qureshi relates his conversion from Islam to Christianity; moreover, in the epilogue, we find out he also struggles with cancer which ultimately takes his life in his early 30s. Nabeel's words hold special meaning for me: "This is not about me. It's about Him and His love for his children."
When struggling with cancer in his last days, instead of praying for healing and additional days, he prayed for his wife and his children. What a truly amazing man of faith and a wonderful life lesson! Father God help me to be your man, help me to be a good husband, help me to be a good father, and help me to be a good grandfather. Amen!
