Story
Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

Truth then and now
Reviewed: 11-23-23
I learned so many of these truths by living them. The core of every story is the main character's journey. Rarely is the change of a story's subject so profound in either fiction or non fiction. Reading this book is time well spent.

Story
The media can't stop talking about the gridlock in Washington, as if a handful of stubborn Republicans are the only thing standing between us and a fully-functional democracy. The reality is that our government was taken over by big business and their allies in both political parties. The getaway driver in this heist was corporate media. The good news is that the American people are very progressive. And soon progressives will take over Washington as well! And when they do, the great majority of Americans will love it.

Perilous Caladan
Reviewed: 12-01-22
Most of this novel is great. It's definitely a must read for those into the expanded Dune universe. I have to say however, it shatters the image I had of the peaceful, bucolic Caladan they used to describe whenever Paul or Jessica was dreaming of home.
In this Caladan series, every time Paul sets foot outside of the castle he is attacked by terrorists, warlords, drug dealers, mercenaries, or assassins. Even if no one is trying to kill him he is falling off of cliffs, tumbling into deadly bushes, being attacked by poison fish, blind snakes, or chased by ball lightening. If this is the Caladan he always dreams of, I think he is in serious need of therapy.
Novels usually have multiple quests afoot but as soon as Paul asked Duncan to go exploring with him, all I could do was roll my eyes because I knew exactly where it was heading. It's tiring and predictable. The rest of the novel was great but I've had my fill of Paul because I don't think they know another way to write about him.

Lots of exposition
Reviewed: 11-09-22
The major conflict in this story is resolved by the halfway point in this novel. The second half covers the establishment of a new home planet. He goes here, he goes there. He talks to this person, he talks to that person. Every third scene he's kissing his lovely wife again...and again...and again. It's a bit tiring. It's not entirely uninteresting but it takes half the novel. Overall, the structure could be better.

Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

Through patience and loyalty, Leto serves the Golden Lion Throne. Where others scheme, the duke of Caladan acts. But Leto’s powerful enemies are starting to feel that he is rising beyond his station.

Story
In The Half Has Never Been Told, historian Edward E. Baptist reveals the alarming extent to which slavery shaped our country politically, morally, and most of all, economically. Until the Civil War, our chief form of innovation was slavery. Through forced migration and torture, slave owners extracted continual increases in efficiency from their slaves, giving the country a virtual monopoly on the production of cotton, a key raw material of the Industrial Revolution.

Very informational but jumps around a bit
Reviewed: 08-01-20
The book provides much insight on the plight of slaves in the south. It tries to connect you to many personal stories of particular individuals but jumping back and forth through the 19th century makes it hard to lock on to the individual stories. Maybe that's just me. I would definitely consider it a must-read however. It's very good.

Story
The era of the coronavirus has tested America, and our leaders and institutions have conspicuously failed. That failure shouldn’t be surprising: Beneath social-media frenzy and reality-television politics, our era’s deep truths are elite incompetence, cultural exhaustion, and the flight from reality into fantasy. The Decadent Society explains what happens when a powerful society ceases advancing - how the combination of wealth and technological proficiency with economic stagnation, political stalemate, and demographic decline creates a unique civilizational crisis.

They will probably realize how little they actually knew. Having strong opinions about things one knows very little of, is a character flaw.
