Story
Brooklyn psychiatrist Dr. Caroline Strange is certain she knows what's best for her patients, her family, and pretty much everyone else, but that all changes when a troubled young man arrives for his appointment and makes a pair of alarming confessions: I am going to kill someone, and I know who you really are. Dr. Caroline is accustomed to hearing her patients’ deepest, darkest secrets, but it seems Nelson Schack may be one step ahead when detectives show up later that day, inquiring about a missing woman.

Story
In Motherhood, Marchiano draws from a deep well of Jungian analysis and symbolic research to present a collection of fairytales, myths, and fables that evoke the spiritual arc of raising a child from infancy through adulthood. Divided into three major segments similar to the stages of a hero's initiatory journey, (Descent, Sojourn, and Return), Motherhood charts how events like pregnancy, the calamities of childhood, and the empty-nest experience are all parts of an odyssey to which every mother receives an invitation.

Wonderful look at motherhood from a Jungian angle
Reviewed: 11-09-22
I put off getting this, since I am not a mother, but I wanted to check it out in support of Lisa Marchiano, who founded the "This Jungian Life" podcast with her fellow analysts. The podcast has been wonderful spiritual comfort food for me since the inception of the pandemic, and I can't recommend it highly enough for anyone remotely interested in Jungian thought.
I enjoyed this book, and would recommend it even to non-mothers. Lisa's deep well of knowledge of archetypal patterns from fairy tales will strike a spark for almost anyone, and may help people understand their own mothers better.
A drawback for me on this was the narration - I simply would rather have had another narrator for this book.

After a tragedy too painful to bear, former novelist Lily Albrecht has resigned herself to a dull, sexless life as a rare-book dealer—until she gets a lead on a book that just might turn everything around. The Book of the Most Precious Substance is a 17th-century manual on sex magic, rumored to be the most powerful occult book ever written—if it really exists at all. And some of the wealthiest people in the world are willing to pay Lily a fortune to find it, if she can.

Loved this book
Reviewed: 08-19-22
This is a wonderful book. I enjoyed the narration, and appreciated the intelligence, wit and sauciness of this story. It's refreshing to read a book featuring occult shenanigans from an author who has spent some time immersed in contemplation of it, rather than grabbing at surface assumptions. I love her unsentimental viewpoint.
This is a great GenX spiritual journey, and it sparks me like much of the great music of this (occult in itself, skipped over and hidden in plain sight) The mordant wit of PJ Harvey - the erotic and pagan poetry of Bjork. Many of this author's fears and fascinations rhyme with what I experienced in this generation, although it's in sync with bohemian exploration through the recent decades. I am not trying to pigeonhole the author, but her cultural references hit every time with me in a way that Jo Nesbo often does, and I realize the joy I feel hearing a brilliant voice from someone close to such similar experiences and touchstones.
It also reminds me a bit of the wonderful raw honesty in Viv Albertine's recent memoirs.
It's fun, erotic, eerie, passionate, and in many cases subtle (again, refreshing.) Wise in a fun way.
I would recommend it those who enjoy a book that integrates a modern bohemian look at self-discovery - kinks, emotional dark zones, horror, helpful substances, and all. Not for those who don't like horror, darkness, or sex in their books. Strongly character-driven, great feminine viewpoint.
I have found a new author to place among my favorites!

Fallopian Rhapsody: The Story of the Lunachicks is a coming-of-age tale about a band of NYC teenagers who forged a sisterhood, found salvation, and fervently crashed the gates of punk rock during the '90s, accidentally becoming feminist icons along the way. More than that, this is a story about the enduring friendship among the book's three central voices: Theo Kogan, Sydney Silver, and Gina Volpe.

You don't have to be a fan to enjoy this book!

I am not done with this book, but I already adore it. As a Gen X woman, I savor this deep dive inside female creative friendship starting from a young age (within my generation.) These rad women did not waste time "talking about it" they just plunged in, in the best DIY punk tradition. I saw their shows a few times when I was in college, and was in awe of their power and fearlessness. Geniuses at regurgitating female stereotypes, shining a feminist light, but with fart jokes. Equal opportunity humanity. I liked hearing them distinguish themselves in the book from the riot girrls - they were not in their heads with theory (as I was.) And this was nothing against riot girrls - that's just not what they were. I admire in them what I did with other punk I saw live at that age - the sheer lack of inhibition - the raw conduit of expression with no filter. They were badass feminists in their way of being. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys biography - you don't have to be a Lunachicks fan (though you may become one.) I am inspired to see women of GenX who are currently powerful and creative. They are going back on tour now, and all have had successes independently. They are women who carved their own way on their own terms. I am currently a fan of Gina Volpe's music from the last few years, and would strongly recommend anyone check that out on Spotify. Some of my favorite music of the last couple years! Another bonus of this audiobook is that it's read by the Lunachicks themselves. A little raw, very real, like punk rock.

I read this because I caught an NPR review of it. It's been a while since I have listened to a book so well written and well-narrated. I thought of Paul Bowles crossed with Patricia Highsmith. The narrator was superb. I would like to hear all of this author read by this narrator.
The only reason I did not give it a 5 is that the story itself was not as powerful as I felt it might be - but getting there was very engaging. To me, an ideal summer read - a compelling story with actual characters. This story is dark - but not near the pitch black of Paul Bowles. I enjoy this author's comfort with portraying the point of view of locals and the visitors/intruders from outside this island, as well as a refugee.
This one captured me.

Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first Lo's stay is nothing but pleasant: The cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, and gray skies fall.

The whole thing is written and narrated in a melodramatic way that almost caused me to stop listening...in hindsight, I should have.
Would you be willing to try another one of Imogen Church’s performances?
yes, although the whining on this one turned me off.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Any additional comments?
As others have mentioned, the male voice impersonations were gratingly awful. I almost gave up because of it. I think I may have really enjoyed this if there had been a more effective narrator. She was find with little girl parts, but needed to ease off trying to sound like a man. A serious voice would have sufficed. If I had noticed that in the sample, I would have skipped this one.

A master storyteller at his best - the O. Henry Prize winner Stephen King delivers a generous collection of stories, several of them brand-new, featuring revelatory autobiographical comments on when, why, and how he came to write (or rewrite) each story. Magnificent, eerie, utterly compelling, these stories comprise one of King's finest gifts to his constant fan. "I made them especially for you," says King. "Feel free to examine them, but please be careful. The best of them have teeth."

For four aging men in the terror-stricken town of Milburn, New York, an act inadvertently carried out in their youth has come back to haunt them. Now they are about to learn what happens to those who believe they can bury the past - and get away with murder. Peter Straub's classic best seller is a work of "superb horror" ( Washington Post Book World) that, like any good ghost story, stands the test of time - and conjures our darkest fears and nightmares.

What would have made Ghost Story better?
If he had cut the novel by half the size and focused it much more.
Would you recommend Ghost Story to your friends? Why or why not?
No. There are some interesting passages, but overall it drags and drags, repetitive and filled with stuffing of little intrigue.
How could the performance have been better?
I hated the voices for the older women. If Stella was supposed to be a glamorous woman, she sounded here like a goony grandma.
What character would you cut from Ghost Story?
Cut it down by several. The film was on a good path as to what was the most compelling part of the story.
