Fascinating and disturbing

This case, or really related cases, was completely unknown to me and I appreciate how important it is to know about it and to have a better sense of the place and time and of how justice can, and sometimes does, go so horribly wrong. It certainly presents Clarence Darrow in a very different light. The presentation is first rate.

Disappointing
Reviewed: 02-14-25
For a good part of this book I thought it was pretty good but by the end I thought it was largely flawed. The religious elements feel force fed, contributing next to nothing to the plot or the characters actions. The question of the divorce was easily and obviously resolvable but was instead artificially dragged out. And, worst of all, the epilog comes completely out of left field and is unbelievable and a crass attempt at getting the reader to by another book. Not a chance.

Story
In 1898, two fatal poisonings horrified New Yorkers. When it emerged that both victims were connected to one person, a wealthy young chemist named Roland Molineux, the police thought they had their man. But proving their suspicions was easier said than done, and convicting Molineux would require creativity on the part of the police and the district attorney. A different world, a different time

This is a hard book to review. The world it describes is so foreign, but that's a good part of the point. These people thought that maybe they were creating a new world order. They were not but it's interesting that they thought they might be able to and that they believed it was worth a try.
This book is a difficult to read outloud and the reader does an excellent job of conveying what the book and the people in the book are about.
Sometimes a Great Notion is one of the greatest books ever written and it's interesting to get a bit of a sense of who Ken Kesey was through this book. I'm glad to have read it.
