For the Love of Medicine and Storytelling

It’s been a long time since I’ve been so riveted by a novel. I’m mostly a non-fiction reader! My experience with physical science perhaps sustains my interest through the detailed medical descriptions in this book.
I enjoyed the story and the narration was so good, I purchased a print copy to better experience this book. I enjoyed the international perspective, the humanity of the characters, and deeply identify with the dedication and passion for excellence of those who pursue a medical career.
Excellent job by the narrator! All the different nationalities were voiced so well.

We are in the midst of a global mental health crisis, and mental illnesses are on the rise. But what causes mental illness? And why are mental health problems so hard to treat? Drawing on decades of research, Harvard psychiatrist Dr. Chris Palmer outlines a revolutionary new understanding that for the first time unites our existing knowledge about mental illness within a single framework: mental disorders are metabolic disorders of the brain. As a long time mental health sufferer, I am “energized” by the science, the message, and the passion of the author. I would be lucky to be one of his patients and have learned new ways to make my life better.
I bought the hardback copy as well. That’s how important his work is to me. Thank you Dr. Palmer!

Story
When Michael Fanone self-deployed to the Capitol on January 6, 2021, he had no idea his life was about to change. When he got to the front of the line, he urged his fellow officers to hold it against the growing crowd of insurrectionists—until he found himself pulled into the mob, tased until he had a heart attack, and viciously beaten with a Blue Lives Matter flag as shouts to kill him rang out. Now, Fanone is ready to tell the full story of that infamous day, along with exploring our country’s most critical issues as someone who has had firsthand experience with many of them.

I’ve watched the attempted insurrection with horror that day, as well as the follow-on awful denial embedded in some of my fellow Americans.
Fanone’s trauma, and continued advocacy for change gives me hope. Thank you for saving our democracy that day, and for this book, telling a vital story, powerfully delivered in your own words.

A Wealth of Information at Multiple Scales

This book presents our current pandemic within the perspective of the broader human history of pandemics. The medical and social history was very interesting to me, and the work also had just the right amount of detail about SARS-Cov2 of today. It is well written for those of us outside the domain of medicine. An important and valuable work.

Story
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

Crucial Story
Reviewed: 11-29-19
The magnitude of institutional protections for high profile predators is just stunning. It’s such an important element to the overall story, in addition to the appalling behavior and abuse that the women were subjected to. It is institutional misogyny that must stop, and books like this will help us turn that ship at last. At least I hope so. I enjoyed the varying voices and only once was startled by the music while driving. The narration came across to me as from the heart of the author.

Story
In the year 2018, it seems as if women’s anger has suddenly erupted into the public conversation. But long before this, women’s anger was not only politically catalytic - but politically problematic. With eloquence and fervor, Rebecca tracks the history of female anger as political fuel - from suffragettes chaining themselves to the White House to office workers vacating their buildings after Clarence Thomas was confirmed to the Supreme Court. She deconstructs society’s (and the media’s) condemnation of female emotion (notably, rage) and the impact of resulting repercussions.

Context
Reviewed: 12-16-18
I so appreciate the blending of history and today’s challenges throughout this work. I’ve realized that the changes I want to see are going to be a long game, but now have a better informed perspective on how long this game is likely to be. This book validates women’s anger, of course, but has additional value by providing historical context. I wish it weren’t so, but we must be clear eyed as we go forward.
