Story
On the surface, Niru leads a charmed life. Raised by two attentive parents in Washington, DC, he's a top student and a track star at his prestigious private high school. Bound for Harvard in the fall, his prospects are bright. But Niru has a painful secret: He is queer - an abominable sin to his conservative Nigerian parents. No one knows except Meredith, his best friend, the daughter of prominent Washington insiders - and the one person who seems not to judge him.

What Does This Novel Want Me to Know?
Reviewed: 03-29-20
While I enjoyed listening to this book--the narration is terrific--I couldn't quite see what the central story is. The focus shifts dramatically as the first-person narrator changes about halfway through, and the story I thought I was experiencing goes somewhere else, almost as if the first half of the novel never happened. Maybe this novel is too ambitious, trying to pull in all the injustices someone like its main character has to live through. Beautiful descriptions of city and landscape. The beginning of the novel tends toward cliche and the ending toward the sentimental.

There are some interesting and nicely written scenes in this book, but mostly this is melodrama based on cliches, stereotypes, and far-fetched events. The story edges near important and complicated ideas a few times, but always turns back. That said, I kept reading to see what was going to happen, even though I had a couple "are you kidding me?" moments.

Short, with a misleading title

While I found Harris's book interesting enough, it feels more like a long article in The Atlantic. Also, while the title suggests Harris is writing an overview of what we know about consciousness, her book is essentially an argument in favor of panpsychism.

Connell and Marianne grew up in the same small town, but the similarities end there. At school, Connell is popular and well liked, while Marianne is a loner. But when the two strike up a conversation - awkward but electrifying - something life changing begins. A year later, they’re both studying at Trinity College in Dublin. Marianne has found her feet in a new social world while Connell hangs at the sidelines, shy and uncertain. Throughout their years at university, Marianne and Connell circle one another.

Intensely Focused
Reviewed: 05-13-19
This book fascinated me from beginning to end. I like how it focuses the reader's field of perception intensely on the minds of the two main characters. The story and the prose are pared down so cleanly and dramatically that every sentence feels sharp, and a single word can be a bullet. As the characters move through time, they don't develop so much as become clear--or, at least, clearer--to themselves. This novel is excellent.

Story
Innovation expert Ted Dintersmith took an unprecedented trip across America, visiting all 50 states in a single school year. He originally set out to raise awareness about the urgent need to reimagine education to prepare students for a world marked by innovation, but America's teachers one-upped him. He met teachers in ordinary settings doing extraordinary things. Capturing bold ideas from teachers and classrooms across America, What School Could Be provides a realistic, and profoundly optimistic, roadmap for creating cultures of innovation and real learning in all our schools.

Dintersmith Cheers for Project-Based Learning
Reviewed: 08-06-18
Make no mistake--this is Dintersmith's argument for wholesale change in America's education system. It's not merely a travelogue. Schools that practice project-based learning are good, and those that don't are bad--this is Dintersmith's position. He makes a good case with clear and compelling real life examples. He sees education as essentially getting students ready for jobs, though he does talk about making students contributing members of a civil society. Dintersmith is also a bit of a cheerleader for himself. Still, the book is worth the time if you're a teacher looking for encouragement to make the jump to project based learning.

Story
In this explosive new book, Sam Harris tears down the wall between scientific facts and human values, arguing that most people are simply mistaken about the relationship between morality and the rest of human knowledge. Harris urges us to think about morality in terms of human and animal well-being, viewing the experiences of conscious creatures as peaks and valleys on a "moral landscape".

Harris is clear and bold in his assertions, and he works hard to make us understand exactly what he means, and why. The notion of a moral landscape is valuable even if one isn't prepared to go so far toward the rational only edge that Harris walks. A smart and compelling book. This is the book that made me read all of Harris's books.

Story
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.
