Story
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Unbelievable, yet true
Reviewed: 05-22-25
The captain and crew pushed the very limits of human endurance. If you think your life is in any way difficult or fraught with peril, “Endurance” will be a humbling journey into what man is truly capable of.
Thank God such men lived, that their stories serve as inspiration for generations to come.

Story
The number one thing men secretly desire of women, yet typically won’t admit it. Are you the one who likes to be in control, especially when it comes to making decisions for you and your partner? Because women are quickly becoming more and more aware of the influence they can have on the world and thus breaking out of their shells, female led relationships are becoming increasingly popular in today’s modern times, and for a good reason.

I went into this title not expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised not only at how relevant the subject matter is, but also the sensitive nature in which it is delivered.
Yes, the robot voice can pull a reader out of their headspace, but the author’s sincerity comes through anyway.
The real-life stories at the end provided the perfect cherry atop a nice sundae of a read.

Just what I didn’t know I needed
Reviewed: 12-21-23
There is a lot in here that can easily be found in many other books: avoid sugar, exercise, get good sleep, etc. but the emotional health portion (quietly deposited at the very end of the book… right when I would have thought he was wrapping it up) spoke directly to me. Seems the good doctor and I have something in common.
Thanks for that - this was the very thing I needed.

There is a real story here, cautiously developed over the course of the entire book. Was it perfect? Maybe not, but First and Only is a far cry better than most other 40k material.
Focusing on the characters, Abnett weaves a relationship story, where character and integrity mean something. Good stuff, and I’m happy to jump into Book 2.

When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

Unbelievable how many people will rush to judgement on a book they’ve never read.
This is not 20 hours of”Elon is the greatest hero since Perseus!” It’s a careful walkthrough which details how he is - flaws and all. Isaacson draws many comparisons to Jobs, and he would know. Very happy this was written, and very happy I read it. Elon is a flawed human being: those without sin cast the first stone.

Somewhat predictable, still great

I was immediately drawn by “the cast”. Having Ser Davos Seaworth as a character was a pleasant surprise but what I enjoyed the most was the relatively fresh take on vampirism. It was good, and the cast was great. And it wasn’t any of that “girlboss” bullshit, just strong female characters who are also compassionate.
I didn’t need the 15 minutes of credits at the end, though. WTF…

Story
Khaavren of the House of Tiassa is a son of landless nobility, possessor of a good sword and “tolerably well-acquainted with its use.” Along with three loyal friends, he enthusiastically seeks out danger and excitement. But in a realm renowned for repartee and betrayals, where power is as mutable as magic, a young man like Khaavren, newly come from the countryside, had best be wary. His life depends on it. And so does the future of Draegara.

Likes:
Humans in a human story
Secrecy, stealth, intrigue
Unique (and vile) antagonist
Accurate portrayal of a brutal universe
Dislikes:
Roller coaster tempo and thematic consistency
Way too many characters for a single narrator
Squandered opportunity at some real horror
If you liked “Legion”, there are *some* elements here to enjoy. The story didn’t do much to push Heresy storyline, but that didn’t bother me. The reader needs patience with this one: the tempo ranges from long periods of mystique building with slight advances and shot bursts of incredibly-paced brutality.

The first story was read so fast, I had to turn down the speed to enjoy it at all.
The second story was fantastic - worth a credit for 5 hours of Tau alone.
The last story was plagued by mediocre writing and mediocre narration. The story was credible, but the dialog and repetitive descriptions were tiresome. It wouldn’t have been as much of an issue the narrator could carry the poor dialog, but she couldn’t. At all.

Tired. Lazy. Statist.
Reviewed: 04-23-23
Every so often someone influential will write a book which tries to force the entirety life into the narrow paradigm that is their subject matter expertise. It almost always fails.
This is one such case.
By stretching the term “hack” and “patch” Schneier makes the case that sum of human existence can be seen through the lens of these two terms. It’s lazy… even disrespectful to the reader. That fact that he is a raging statist makes it even worse. No thank you.
