I have a problem when the narrator says repeatedly, “he said, “ or “she said,” when it is obvious from the context who is speaking. Quite distracting.

Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Good but not my favorite

The picture of the time period was engrossing and affecting.
The narrator disappointed a bit because there were way too many “he said” and “Laredo said” when it is very (!) clear who is speaking. That is unusual for Ms. Whelan and very distracting.

The narrator was ok—a little self conscious and diction a bit too precise. Far(!) too many similes and endless creative writing class descriptions.

Saskia, you disappointed me!
Reviewed: 09-04-24
I generally order books based on narrators i like so I ordered this one. The story is fine , but the narration was not good. The voices of the characters were clear, but why the “she said” or “he said” every time when it is perfectly clear who is talking? It is not necessary and is disruptive.
I’m now afraid to order another book by Saskia!

Loved the narrator; the story not so much!
Reviewed: 06-07-24
I did get to the end, but I wish I had gotten there about 4 hours sooner. This was definitely drawn out and had no surprises; the ending was obvious after about hour 4.
The narration was fine except for the child who was very annoying. 4 year olds speak much better than that.
I admit I fast-forwarded through the innumerable recaps.

I am an avid fan of Maisie Dobbs. I have read or listened to all the previous books in the series. I am a bit sad to report that I thought this one was a bit boring. It really takes forever for the plot, what there is of it, to unfold. At 5+ hours, I am not at all compelled to listen to the rest. The narrator is OK; it's just boring.
