About this listen

Long-listed, Barnes and Noble Best New Books of the Year, 2024

"Narrator January LaVoy brings a richly layered performance to a story.... She expertly handles the large cast of multigenerational characters"—AudioFile on Hideaway

The #1 New York Times-bestselling author of Identity presents a suspenseful novel of tragedy and trauma, love and family, and the evil that awaits.

As they do each June, the Foxes have driven the winding roads of Appalachia to drop off their children for a two-week stay at their grandmother’s. Here, twelve-year-old Thea can run free and breathe in the smells of pine and fresh bread and Grammie’s handmade candles. But as her parents head back to suburban Virginia, they have no idea they’re about to cross paths with a ticking time bomb.

Back in Kentucky, Thea and her grandmother Lucy both awaken from the same nightmare. And though the two have never discussed the special kind of sight they share, they know as soon as their tearful eyes meet that something terrible has happened.

The kids will be staying with Grammie now in Redbud Hollow, and thanks to Thea’s vision, their parents’ killer will spend his life in supermax. Over time, Thea will make friends, build a career, find love. But that ability to see into minds and souls still lurks within her, and though Grammie calls it a gift, it feels more like a curse—because the inmate who shattered her childhood has the same ability. Thea can hear his twisted thoughts and witness his evil acts from miles away. He knows it, and hungers for vengeance. A long, silent battle will be waged between them—and eventually bring them face to face, and head to head…

Outstanding!!

This has to be one of the BEST book by Nora Roberts I’ve ever read! This story is full of twists and turns and it captures you immediately. I’ve literally tuned out my normal life for the last 2 days just to listen!!! The story is so dang creative and there are parts that will make you laugh out loud! January Lavoy is such an amazing narrator and adds soooo much to this book! Thank you for your voice, ma’am! This is a book I will definitely spread the word about. Thank you Nora Roberts for playing mind games with me in this book!!!

Enjoyable contemporary romance with a fantasy twist that ends with a whimper

The romance was fun, the supporting characters were a delight, and the suspense of the central conflict was engaging. But how the author choice to settle the conflict was very silly. I imagined how it would look to the supporting characters who were watching and giggled. What a disappointing ending.

One of Nora Roberts Best! Excellent Story & Performance! I love January LaVoy!!!

I love Nora Roberts’ books, but this one is now at the top of my list. Excellent storyline and characters. January LaVoy is my favorite narrator. She uses a different voice for each character, and brings them to life with amazing expression and emotion. Her child and male voices are excellent. Her narration is excellent too, such a smooth and soothing voice. I pick a lot of books based on her being the narrator. I think she should preform all of Nora Roberts’ books.

Incredible story

This book is by far my favorite from Nora Roberts. I have listened to four of her previous books which I also enjoyed very much. But this one I could not put down. It’s just a wonderful book and story. Loved every minute of it.

Great book!!!

The narrator was brilliant. Of course Nora Roberts has the most amazing dialogue. She makes you feel like you are in the story and feeling all of the emotions. Great book.

The narrator was awesome

Pulled me in and didn’t let go start to finish. An emotional roller coaster.

I know it’s the same formula each time but I didn’t care. Loved the story and always the idea having your, creating your own.
