Story
April 1940. By terms of the Soviet Nazi Nonaggression pact, the two dictatorships divided the helpless nation of Poland. Now, the Russians are rounding up enemies of the state in their occupation zone, but one essential target slips away. Dr. Sebastian Kapsky had spent years working with Walter Riedel and Werner von Braun in the early days of rocket science, but as a man with a conscience he refused to continue when he saw the perversion of their work by the Nazis. That makes him the most knowledgeable person about German superweapons outside of Germany.

Oddly Disconnected
Reviewed: 10-29-23
This book’s disconnection from the timeline of the rest of the series detracted from my overall enjoyment. The author is an adequate substitute for Mr. Griffin, but the book doesn’t fit the rest of the series, and the ending is oddly abrupt.

Story
In a small Southern town where loyalty to family and to "your people" carries the weight of a sacred oath, defying those unspoken rules can be a deadly proposition. After 15 years of growing up in the Ozark hills with his widowed mother, high-school freshman Boady Sanden is beyond ready to move on. He dreams of glass towers and cityscapes, driven by his desire to be anywhere other than Jessup, Missouri. The new kid at St. Ignatius High School, if he isn't being pushed around, he is being completely ignored.

A revelation
Reviewed: 09-25-21
Eskens deftly weaves a deeply moving coming of age story with a dollop of suspense and a rasher of social commentary. The beautiful portrayal of a mid-seventies summer in the South is only enhanced by the deep and, at times, gravelly voice and superb pacing of narrator Kevin Stilwell.

Francis has a gift.
Reviewed: 04-18-21
High Stakes differs from Francis’s typical fare. Here we know the villain all along. His protagonist is interesting and Francis’s gift for a well-turned phrase makes me smile a second time through.

I haven't read this book for more than a decade. My joy in rediscovering some of the details was complete, and the performance was spot on.

Story
It's been too long since the entire Quinn family has been able to celebrate the holidays under the same roof, but that's about to change. With Bart back safe and sound from Afghanistan, the Quinns are preparing for a holiday more joyous than any they've experienced in years. And Bart's safe return isn't the family's only good news: Kevin is enjoying married life with Isabelle; Patrick is getting back on his feet after paying his debt to society; Ava thinks she's finally found the love of her life; and Kelly is thrilled to see his family reunited at last.

Not her best

I didn't enjoy this as much as I usually enjoy Hilderbrand's books, but I'm not sure if it was the story or the medium. I definitely didn't connect with the audio book, although the performance was excellent.
