I really enjoyed the banter in this story. At first I wasn't sure what to think of it but the brash, out-spoken way the key characters interacted was really fun. Definitely recommend this one.

Thirty-four-year-old Ruby Bridge is a not-too-successful comedienne who uses her mother, a nationally-syndicated "moral and spiritual counselor" as the main fodder for her cynical, rather bitter humor. Her mother Nora, long divorced from Ruby's father, is a woman whose past is just about to catch up with her - in the form of blackmail by a former lover.

This book, like many of Kristin Hannah's was just wonderful. I have a close relationship with my sister and mother; every time I listen to her I want to call them and tell them how much they are loved.

Repeats a lot
Reviewed: 03-09-18
I get that we need to be attached to a characters emotions to really get into a book. There were a lot of good parts to this book but there were also a lot of things that are repeated ad nauseum. I wanted to yell "I get it already!"
The ending was good even though I figured out the "who done it" person fairly quickly. There were details that were unexpected.

Story
Sorry. The single word is written on a mirror. In front of it hangs a Minneapolis Internal Affairs cop. Was it suicide? Or a kinky act turned tragic? Either way, it wasn't murder. At least not according to the powers that be. But veteran homicide detective Sam Kovac and his wisecracking, ambitious partner, Nikki Liska, think differently. Together they begin to dig at the too-neat edges of the young cop's death, uncovering one motive - and one suspect - after another.

Good mystery.
Reviewed: 03-09-18
The mystery itself was pretty good. I had some of it figured out pretty early on but, the story got more complex as it went on.
The only trouble I had was that I couldn't relate the main character Kovak with the narrators voice. It wasn't that it was bad it just came off as kind of a Columbo character and I just couldn't see Kovak that way. I also had trouble with the female voices. They just didn't flow that well for me.

It took me about an hour to get into this book but, I'm glad I stuck with it!
Claire and Meg are complex characters that are deeply wounded by their shared and individual childhood experiences. As the reader you feel for both of them and see both sides of their issues. Underneath it all is a deep, profound love for each other. Whether you can relate better to one of their personalities or the other it doesn't matter, you can't help but care about these women and the people in their lives. Fantastic book!

Great Characters

I loved all the characters in this book. The plot sucked me in and I just kept thinking about it wanting to know what was next. I actually cared about the characters and wanted things to work out for them. I didn't care about whether or not there were laptops or cell phones at the wrong time, as other reviewers pointed out, I didn't even notice it. I'm trying to decide what the next Diane Chamberlain book I will read will be!
The performer was great and fit very well for me.

What struck me as the most poignant part of this book is that the situation could happen to any one of us. I found myself caring more and more for Alan. I could see the path he was spiraling towards and my heart just broke. His journey is very sad and uplifting at the same time. I'll definitely continue on with him in the next book.
