I have read all of Robert Dugoni’s books, and they have all been very well written and engaging. This one, however, is in a different class and is extraordinary. I’ve read other WWII books with compelling stories and heroic characters., and this historic fiction rates at the top, combining Dugoni’s writing skills and a little known aspect of WWII.

Depression era culture in a city

It is such a joy to read Dugoni’s mysteries. Unlike other modern authors, he employs an expressive vocabulary without curse words. Delightful. This one was no exception. This Great Depression city story was quite different from my parent’s experience as my dad and uncles made trips to California to find work when the Texas farm could no longer support 5 growing and grown boys. America was a unique place that made the bad guys worse but made the good guys better - like Fish and Shu. It still is. I enjoyed the story, the characters, and history. Dugoni surprised me with his acting ability. Good job.

The book was thorough in its history and timely for our turbulent times. I would have benefitted from maps, but that’s the price I pay for enjoying on Audible.

The book was most enjoyable. Have only one complaint. As a life long pilot, it took me a minute to figure out that the many references to alternator should have been altimeter. As it was audio, I don’t know whether that error was from the narrator or writer. There was one other but it was not repeated as “alternator” was.

Living through the Civil War becomes a painful experience through this well written and narrated book. It teaches valuable lessons about the nature of God and His love and care for us.

I had my doubts because so many books read by the author are less than wonderful. But, this author was also a performer as well as a superb mystery writer. Totally enjoyable.
