Story
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Don't read if Depressed
Reviewed: 10-08-24
Stay away if depressed!! Listening to this book is the same experience I get when doom scrolling on YouTube or Facebook. When depressed, people have a tendency to find things that make them feel worse about themselves. Even though there may be some possible insights that can be gathered.
The book has a lot of circular logic, like many self-help books. With much scrutiny you would see that his ideology cancels itself out.
I did like chapter 7 "Just Do It", but it's what many of us have read before. His take is a bit different and that is helpful.
Just an oversimplification of the human experience. The author attributes just about everything to narcissistic personality styles. While we have come across narcissism in people and ourselves, you can't attribute all human actions to it. Every psychologist knows that with every action or thought a human takes, many traits are involved in the creation of that action or thought.

Story
One afternoon - after another failed attempt to get motivated to exercise - I (accidentally) started my first mini habit. I initially committed to do one push-up, and it turned into a full workout. I was shocked. This "stupid idea" wasn't supposed to work. I was shocked again when my success with this strategy continued for months (and to this day). I had to consider that maybe I wasn't the problem in those 10 years of mediocre results. Maybe it was my prior strategies that were ineffective, despite being oft-repeated as "the way to change" in countless books.
