As a non-science person there were parts that challenges my comprehension but the majority was fascinating and illuminating. I wonder where these insights will take us.

This is not a logical story. Multiple times the plot relies on characters acting in a way far removed from not only their previous selves but also basic logical behavior. Perhaps a good author can make that work once or twice in a novel but here it felt like the author was trying to make a storyline to check off as many boxes of contemporary issues as possible, as though someone had made a bar bet of how much you can or can’t pack in to a novel. If so, I’d assume she won the bet, but the resulting novel feels like a cheap representation of contemporary life.

So many cross cultural insights and historical connections; I’ve gained a much deeper understanding of the Chinese diaspora thanks to this book!

Amazingly thoughtful writing and outstanding performance. Not too many books bring me to tears and this one did, despite the stomach churning violence necessary to who the characters are. The characters are full, beautiful, and imperfect people. Thank you for this book and reading!!!!

Ms Adan has been at the heart of many significant events and her courage, thoughtfulness, and openness about these experiences remind us of the power that can lie in one lifetime. I am so grateful to her for sharing and passing the legacy of her father far beyond her family and country.

I felt compelled to finish this out of responsibility to my book club, not for any enjoyment of the weakly drawn storyline. It was full of exhausting adverbs and characters oft needed “time to think” through their big feelings about illogical and bland plot turns. There are no character revelations that aren’t obvious to any reader of sound mind by the tenth page. The othering of short stringers provide a thin veil for one-dimensional author commentary on the world today. The singular benefit of the book is that it readily reminds one of an old essay by DFW critiquing a supposedly “sci-if” novel by Updike for how little if any futuristic dimensions it presented. A version of Updike’s dull flowers bloom again here, and you’re probably going to want to take an April shower in DFW or any other author/editor combo who seek to offer their reader something other than checked boxes if you, too, must read this.
