Story
In the fall of 1969 eight prominent anti-Vietnam War activists were put on trial for conspiring to riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. One of the eight, Black Panther cofounder Bobby Seale, was literally bound and gagged in court by order of the judge, Julius Hoffman, and his case was separated from that of the others.

Still Incredibly Relevant
Reviewed: 03-31-23
The principles on trial are still incredibly relevant today, and listeners who see themselves as advocates for equality, peace, and justice may find themselves just as angry and bewildered as the defendants and lawyers in this trial.

Story
It’s easy to get disheartened when your planet has been blown up, the woman you love has vanished due to a misunderstanding about space/time, the spaceship you are on crashes on a remote and Bob-fearing planet, and all you have to fall back on are a few simple sandwich-making skills. However, instead of being disheartened, Arthur Dent makes the terrible mistake of starting to enjoy life a bit–and immediately all hell breaks loose.

Story
Maggie Nelson's The Argonauts is a genre-bending memoir, a work of "autotheory" offering fresh, fierce, and timely thinking about desire, identity, and the limitations and possibilities of love and language. At its center is a romance: the story of the author's relationship with the artist Harry Dodge. This story, which includes Nelson's account of falling in love with Dodge, who is fluidly gendered, as well as her journey to and through a pregnancy, is an intimate portrayal of the complexities and joys of (queer) family making.

Maggie Nelson weaves a wonderful mix of memoir and study on language and identity. There are stories that are so relatable to any person, and then there are times that get so heady I had to rewind and re-listen. Be patient with yourself as you listen. She delivers a unique perspective that is worth listening to.

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ("It's a piece of cake! Just do four hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!") I have decided to tell these stories just as I have always done, in my own voice.

Rock and roll in the BC (Before Cooper) era was a tamer, milder world. In Who I Really Am, Cooper’s latest addition to Audible’s Words + Music series, we learn how the boa-wearing (not the feathered kind) maestro arrived at a show and sound - let’s call it AC for After Cooper - that has entertained millions of kids while terrifying parents in equal measure. Cooper drew inspiration from Saturday matinee horror movies, applied a "no such thing as too much" attitude, and hitched it to a kick-ass rock and roll band.

I didn't think a story told by Alice Cooper about his life and adventures would be boring, but this audiobook absolutely dragged. The stories are a collection of disjointed memories filled with not-so-humble brags. His cadence when speaking is also really uncomfortable. He talks casually like he's in an interview, but all of the lines are scripted and written, so it just sounds unnatural. It's a short listen, but I struggled to finish it.

Story
In this groundbreaking history of the modern American metropolis, Richard Rothstein explodes the myth that America's cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation - that is, through individual prejudices, income differences, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather, he incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation - the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments - that actually promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

This was an uncomfortable read, but incredibly necessary to understand the pervasive history of state-sponsored segregation. If you have any doubt that segregation still exists or believe that it is individually-driven, this book will convince you otherwise.

In this revolutionary exposé, Harvard Law School bankruptcy expert Elizabeth Warren and financial consultant Amelia Tyagi show that today's middle-class parents are increasingly trapped by financial meltdowns. Astonishingly, sending mothers to work has made families more vulnerable to financial disaster than ever before. Today's two-income family earns 75% more money than its single-income counterpart of a generation ago, but has 25% less discretionary income to cover living costs.

Very Interesting, but Not Really About the Music
Reviewed: 08-14-21
I picked up this book on a recommendation, expecting it to be all about the music scene of early Norwegian black metal. While there's certainly a lot of that at the beginning, the focus of the book seems to be more about the ideological and political motivations of characters in the scene. It delves super deeply into sociology, politics, and religion. I was interested the entire time and the performer is great. It's really a very entertaining book, I just want people to understand the contents before they pick it up.
