About this listen

It’s easy to get disheartened when your planet has been blown up, the woman you love has vanished due to a misunderstanding about space/time, the spaceship you are on crashes on a remote and Bob-fearing planet, and all you have to fall back on are a few simple sandwich-making skills. However, instead of being disheartened, Arthur Dent makes the terrible mistake of starting to enjoy life a bit–and immediately all hell breaks loose.

Hell takes a number of forms: there’s the standard Ford Prefect version, in the shape of an all-new edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and a totally unexpected manifestation in the form of a teenage girl who startles Arthur Dent by being his daughter when he didn’t even know he had one.

Can Arthur save the Earth from total multidimensional obliteration? Can he save the Guide from a hostile alien takeover? Can he save his daughter, Random, from herself? Of course not. He never works out exactly what is going on. Will you?

Critic reviews

“Hitchhiker fans rejoice! . . . [Here’s] more of the same zany nonsensical mayhem.”—New York Times Book Review

“It is Mr. Adams’s genius to hurl readers into a plot that seems to go everywhere and nowhere, then suddenly drop the pieces into place, click, click, click, like tumblers in a lock. . . . Delightful.”—Baltimore Sun

Likely the best written of Adams' novels, prepare yourself for the dark ending. Tight plot, excellent pacing, and truly a bummer. Loved Freeman's acting, would like to hear his candid opinions on Adams' work outside of the publicity he did for the movie.

Darkest Adams Book

Definitely the weakest of the four. Still enjoyable to listen to because of Martin Freeman.

Not great, but Martin Freeman makes it enjoyable

The reader was perfect . He has inspired me to write some short stories. I love the way he talks about the mishmash of the cosmos. And rocket launches

Adams imagination

A fun ride around parallel universes with the same circular logic, and quirky scientific explanations as the previous books.

Hilarious 5th book in the series

Perfect narrator for a great series. I just love the whole bit. So long and thanks for all the fish 🐠.

Love. Thanks Martin Freeman, you made this series.

The story itself may actually be the best of the series.
I just hated how it all wrapped up, because I really wanted it to keep going.
But, if you’re going to end it, this is the only way to do it.
I guess the guy with the 2 heads could have had his own adventures, but if you included himself in the number of people who like him, you’d have a solid ONE, and a few dozen or so, “not actually like, not as such.”
Martin Freeman made this story come to life as he has done before. He took a really really really good story and made it fantastic to listen to with his enthusiasm and range of voice, his ability to nail an accent, (except for the redneck bartender where E. P. Was singing his own classics, he wasn’t so great, but I guess it could have been overdone for the sake of just slipping in the fact that he can also do a US southern-drawl as well and didnt feel he’d have the opportunity to show off his talent otherwise) ...I forgot the subject of this sentence. 🤔
Whatever! Martin Freemen is great.

I didn’t want it to end

The only problem I found was the end of the book just seemed so abrupt? Like, strange. But the story was fabulous and, as always, Martin Freeman was miraculous

Fantastic as always
